Hitachi 40gb HD in a Gateway laptop; the CDROM port (not just the drive) is dead and BIOS doesn't allow booting to a USB device. My question is: if I pull the HD and put it in an enclosure, hook it to a desktop USB port, can I boot to Hitachi's diag tool and have it pick up the USB connected drive? I need to test it (and repair it if needed- DFT has a repair option) before proceeding... any help, ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.....

If you are lucky enough to have the correct mechanical interconnections the hard drive will perform as any other in the enclosure.
