HDD loose in PC case to prevent noisy metal vibration

    Hi.

In recent months, the vibrating of the metal around my HDD is becoming unbearable.

The HDD is healthy and works fine so I don't why this is happening.

If I have it loose in the PC case like so (image attached) - Would it be safe? The red box indicates the three slots where the HDD used to be.

    Thanks.

Can't get your picture to work. As long as you don't move the PC around much it should not be a problem. I have had a few hanging down in the past. Odd that it is making that much noise. Usually when mine start getting loud, they are on the way out.

Agree with Fred,it will be fine as long as you don't move the computer and forget which happens easier than you think.

Happened to me a few times after testing a drive in a computer then gone to move the pc and heard it banging around inside, don't worry though not my computer:p

A more preferred fix is to find what's vibrating and stop it, you hard drive shouldn't vibrate that much as it's perfectly balanced unless it's dying.

You need to extract it first.

It is quite now, it caused vibrations in the metal holding bay that was extremely irritating.

    How about the HDD overheating?

How hot is your floor? :-D

Should be OK, check the temp.

    My floor?

My HDD is currently 39 °C. Is that ok?

Sorry, was joking, would be a problem if your floor was very hot. Or maybe on top of a heater vent. 39° C should be good. My drive says it is OK up to 50°, but mine is a hybrid SSD/regular hard drive thing.

There is physically nothing obvious to suggest why it is vibrating. Unfortunately I dont have another SATA drive to test - then I'd know for certain if it really is the HDD holding case or HDD at fault.

    I see. :p

At the moment I it is 22° C after just turning PC on this morn. Last night it reached 39° C after being on for 6 hours.

Should the HDD need air moving/space underneath it?

You could use some wood blocks to get some air flow if you are worried about it. I would not, unless it is causing a problem. I have seen where people used rubber band type stuff to suspend a hard drive in a bay to prevent noise.

Have you tried a program like Speccy to get info about your drive?

Good program, shows my drives current temp, and the max temp for the device.

The wooden blocks fix sounds great.
If rubber bands are used - would that not make the HDD move which would be bad for the platters?

I use Linux Mint 13 MATE, I can still check temperatures and they are fine right now.

  13. I would probably try to bend metal case so your HD fits more snug. Instead of the space being like this I I, try to bend steel like this ) ( Or perhaps cushion inside edges of case with some electrical tape. Sorry for the crudeness of my images, but I believe you get the point.

Hi. I put bits of cardboard in the 2 plastic things that held the HDD in place. This meant the HDD was jammed in tight but the noise continued. I reckon bending the metal case would not help.
