i am a long time lurker, first time poster. i am a total novice when it comes to computers. i need your help with something that is bugging the crud out of me. hopefully i'll describe it accurately.

the pesky problem is this. my internet explorer 7 will not access the internet after some time goes by (say anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours) without me using the computer. i am using a t & t dsl to access the internet. i usually end up rebooting my computer about 2 to 3 times a day just to 'reset' the internet. to be clear- i can click on the internet explorer tab and the explorer comes up, but never 'engages' any internet sites.

anybody that may be able to assist me will have my gratitude.

    thanks

    Hello and Welcome to MG's

There is a "AT&T Self Support Tool " It's a click/fix, will check your settings.
You can login to the ATT site and download it, since their available downloads go by email domain, I did not supply link to downloads just in case not compatible with your domain.

After you login, go to Downloads
    http://helpme.att.net/index.php

Most likely it's a setting on your modem, network or firewall. See if the tool helps you, easier than checking all the settings.

Have you tried an alternative browser just to see if the same thing happens? It's a good idea because you can narrow down the problem... for example, if the same thing happens with a different browser, then we know it's not a problem with IE7; we'd know it's either a Windows system problem (unlikely, but possible) or a hardware problem as suggested above... here's some alternative browsers to try:
    FireFox http://www.majorgeeks.com/Mozilla_Firefox_d2248.html
    Opera http://www.majorgeeks.com/Opera_d559.html
You may want to look at the malware guide also http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
