Okay, I'm not a complete newb. I know enough to know I hardly know anything. I use my computer mainly for online gaming. Yesterday, my wife went to a site Vintagesociety.com (I think that was the domain) from a link to a fashion site. This site appeared to do something with adobe acrobat. The next thing I know Mcafee firewall is saying that a couple of new programs are trying to access the internet. I blocked these. The new programs trying to access the internet were go.exe and 12345.exe. I believe these were just randomly named files by hijacker

My browser has been hijacked. Links are redirected to random sites. Also I'm blocked from real anti-virus/malware site. I'm either blocked or it pulls up some b.s. antispyware site. The computer also started running very slow. I ran mcafee virus scan. It didn't detect anything.

I went to add/remove programs and I saw one that said simply, "otto", which seemed unfamiliar. I clicked on the "change" button and it seemed to lock up and not do anything. I suspect this may be part of the changes. It may not be.

I'm using my work computer right now. So my questions:
How do I determine what I'm fighting?
How do I get rid of it?
Anyone brave enough to go to vintagesociety.com and see what I got? (I think I got the rogue domain name right. If that's not it, let me know and I'll ask the wife again. I'm certainly not visiting it on this computer).

If I have to download anything, I'll have to do it from this computer (work computer) and take it home to install.

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm at a loss.

    Rod

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Thank you for the starting point. I'll go through this and report back what I find or can't find.
