For the past few days, as soon as my pc finishes booting, my onscreen cursor begins to move erratically and uncontrollably all over the screen, sometimes parking along the right-hand edge of the visible screen. If I'm patient enough, I can OCCASIONALLY regain temporary control of the cursor by moving the mouse around, but the cursor eventually goes off on its own. This is becoming very frustrating.

I own a 2-year old Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows XP Home Edition. I maintain an updated subscription to McAfee Security Suite (anti-virus; anti-spyware; firewall; etc.), and also run AdAware SE Personal Edition daily, as well as AOL's own version of anti-virus/anti-spyware software, usually before I log off the computer.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Most of the time when this happens, it is a problem with your mouse and not malware. Try cleaning it or use another temporarily to see if it solves the problem. If a new another mouse does the exact samething, tell me about it.

    chaslang:

I borrowed mouses from two different sources and they both worked fine, so a new mouse ought to take care of my problem.

On a related topic, could you recommend a few good anti-spyware/adware software packages that I should be running in addition to McAfee Internet Security Suite, AdAware SE Personal Edition, and AOL's house-brand version?

    Thanx for your help!

In Chas's absence I will endevour to answer this,

Good options to have as complementary applicatiosn to your existing software would be.

    Spywareblaster
Does not scan and remove spyware but does help prevent it being installed in the first place by adding all the known sites and URLs to the blocked site list of the browser, that propagate this unwelcome guest!

    Microsoft Windows Defender Beta
Good resident malware scanner, also has a few other tools, one as mentioned earlier is the ability to tell you whats in your startup and which software it relates to, this allows you to make your mind up to wether you really need it to start at boot or not... to get to this menu run the software and click Tools > Software Explorer > the drop down box gives you some options but generally it starts with startups, just look down the list and decide what software you have installed that doesnt really need to start at boot time but only when you need it, choices are Disable( if your not sure you want to remove fully or not ) and Delete ( to perminently remove ).

    A2 ( A-squared )
This is a trojan/dialer/malware scanner which scans for various varients that some retial software missed, it is not resident but an on-demand scanner, so it works well with your existing software in McAfee, it updates very frequently and just double checks your other scans. It does however need you to sign up to use and update it, this is free and they do not spam you )

More options and a nice colour coded guide to must have free applications are below.

But this should not be used if already using AOL's antispyware software. Only one realtime blocking tool should be used.

A2 ontop of McAfee is okay because A2 is not a full antivirus application and has been designed to compliment your AV program.

Cheers Chas, didnt know that about AOL and Defender ( guess I ignore AOL things ).. would AOL not hamper McAfee Security Suite also?

I'm not absolutely positive (since I never use anything by AOL and always uninstall it if it is installed on my own PCs) but AOL my repackage McAfee as there antivirus. So I'm not sure if that is what Art_Vandelay has or not. But yes, if McAfee is not part of AOL and what was installed from AOL has either (or both) an antivirus or an antispyware program then it would be a problem.
