A couple of months ago I use IE and started going to cbs.com to watch the free episodes and i was able to watch them with no problem at all (I have a verizon dsl connection). About two weeks ago, it worked but it took a very, very long time to load (I thought it was just my pc b/c it was older then dirt! still running windows ME) and i was getting a new one.

Well, the new one arrived and I set up my dsl connection to the computer and I went to connect to cbs.com to watch the episodes i had missed, figuring that it would work because it was a newer pc and a newer OS (Windows XP SP2), but it took twice as long to load as on the old pc! When it did finally load, I had sound but the picture just froze -it wouldn't move... at all.

My question is, can i fix this? is there something i can do/undo to make it faster? is it IE? is there something to download to make it work or is it that im just stuck because i have a really crappy connection?? and if thats the case how come it worked absoultley fine for a long while and just started not to work?

Please help I dont know what to do??!! Thanks!! :)

Its alot of sites, i cant say all of them cuz when i came on here it loaded pretty quickly, but cbs, yahoo and others are veryyy slow with the loading and if they load it freezes every 5 seconds for about 3 seconds (i calculated it ;) )

Have you contacted your ISP for possible problems on your line?
Possibly, the modem is starting to fail.
The new computer may have so much manufacturer crap pre-loaded, auto updaters may be grabbing the bandwidth.
Do you have a firewall and anti-virus running? As Kestrel13! suggests, malware may have gotten on your system.

it seems like if i shut down my pc for say a day or two and then i start it up its super fast but if i leave it running by the next day or two its slow again. I guess im just going to have to keep it shut down when even im not using it.

Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it! ;)

Do you do maintainence on your computer. By this I mean defragment, clean out old rubbish, disable stuff you dont need at the start etc?

If not you should do so heres a link you may want to follow:-
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650
It should speed you up a little!

Also heres a link to TuneUp Utilities 2007, Its a commercial program however but there is a 30 day trial. if you want to buy it then its upto you. Anyway download the
    Free Trial from here:-
    http://www.tune-up.com/

    > Install it
    > Run It

    > Click on optimize and improve
    >Click on Accelerate Downloads and Internet Surfing
    > Put in your connection speed (eg 2mbit or whatever)
    > Click Next
    > Click Next again

    > Now click System Optimization on the left

    > Leave Visual Effects alone (unless of course you want to change them!)
    > Change Use Of Computer to Computer With Network Or Internet Connection (Im assuming thats correct for you?)
    > Click Next
    > Click Next again

This may help a little by changing all your system and registry settings to better suit what you do. It speeded up my pc and connection loads. But you must regularly run a program like CCleaner to get all the junk off your pc. And defragment often too.

    Hope this helps ;)

A restart will refresh your RAM, and there are quite a few tweaks you can use in XP to speed things up. A link I still use on occasion:
    http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm
there's also a zip file of a handy pdf (Adobe Reader) document here:
    http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html
And use CCleaner to take out the trash as often as you see fit:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html
If you edit the registry I'd recommend backing up your system, and even if you don't edit the registry I'd recommend it. To use the free backup program that comes with XP, ntbackup.exe give this a read:
    http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/backup/ntbackup.htm
there are also many free programs found on this site I have used :

Another program I like is DH TuneXP 1.5 it is freeware.
