Help! My computer freezes every few minutes...

Hi! My problem is every few minutes or so, my system "stalls" for a few seconds then starts up right where I left off. It gets irritating after the third or fourth time. I've tried uninstalling programs I no longer use, resetting my start-up to only run the most necessary programs, updating drivers, and system restore. Nothing seems to be helping. Even right now - I'm am becoming angrier and angrier at my laptops freezing frequency!! Please post anything that may keep me from throwing my computer into the wall!!
