Help! Our mouse keeps moving on it's own!

My mouse has started moving around of it's own accord. We can be using the mouse when all of a sudden it will start moving around all over the screen (quite slowly) and you can't make it stop until it's ready. We've bought a new laser mouse but it doesn't make any difference. Have run several scans for viruses and now don't have any. Anybody got any ideas? (system is on Windows XP Home).

 

what kind of mouse pad are you using? try using a white sheet of paper and see if it still moves on its own.

 

Try this:

Insert your XP installation CD.

Open a command prompt by hitting windows key + r (or clicking Start --> Run), typing 'CMD' (without the quotes) and pressing enter (or clicking ok). At the prompt type 'sfc /scannow' and press enter. Let the system file checker run, verifying your system files are in good condition.

If you still have a problem, open device manager using the same method as above, but typing 'devmgmt.msc' instead of 'CMD' Under Mice and Other Pointing Devices, are there any exclamation marks, or red x's? If so, I would right click your mouse, and select uninstall. Windows will re-install the device after a restart.
