Hey all :) I've previously posted about this before but i didn't get too many replies, and I still haven't fixed it yet. However, now my Java isn't working and I cannont enable it using my security settings.. Here's my problem. ( I've had for 2 years now) My security area is greyed out and unclickable, even the sites and settings are as well. I dont know what caused it, but when it happend, it also greyed out the option to change my homepage as well. I found a fix changing some registry key for the hompage, ( and is now working fine) but I never found a fix for the security problem. Which i need to be able to acess and it's pretty important. Anyone have any ideas?

OH, and p.s... i'm running Windows ME and IE 6 with service pack
Thanks to all replies in advance,

Thanks a bunch, Ok I can add these to stop someone from changing them again. But It didn't seem to fix the problem, do you know what that registry key is supposed to be origonaly..... SecChangeSettings. is set to the value of "1" right now.. is that correct?

    Thanks again ..

it might also be the content advisor gone haywaire. Has anyone enabled the content advisor?

    Fw190 Lt. Anti-Social

yes, but I was just pondering that the content advisor may have been what put those registry entries in there.

well, it's just that I've seen the content advisor do some really odd things when it comes to locking people out of their own IE, so I figured it could be a possibility.

Looks like you've got some adware and spyware in there lolli (not that I have anything against Hot Sex ;))

I'd recommend running Ad-aware and SpywareBlaster along with Spybot that I see you already have. Make sure all three and your antivirus are updated to the latest definitions.

    Hi Lolli,

    A couple of suggestions:

    1) You have Spyware Search & Destroy, there is an option under Immunize to prevent some changes to the Internet Explorer options. It is unlikely but possible that this is being enabled to cause some of the problems you are seeing. The options appear only to affect the change of the home page and the display of the options dialog from the control panel.

    2) Another possibilty are Windows Policy Editors that Windows administrators use to set the security for PCs in the domain. I don't know if one of these exist for Windows ME (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;266271) but someone here may be able to suggest something similar or where a Windows ME Policy Editor may be found. There may even be an Internet Explorer Policy Editor.

Thanks Maxwell, I've searched my computer for the file for the policy editor, not there. It's possible there maybe an internet explorer policy editor like you said, but i haven't looked into that much yet, but I will asap. Like i said before this thing is stubborn, I only found on other comment online with a person that had the exact same problem.. However! You have to pay and join the site to reveal the problem solver.. Lucky me lol... Any other suggestions in the mean time?

Ya know what, just searching for the IE policy editer, I came to think. It seems as though this problem started around the time of when I upgraded to IE6...I can't be sure of the date and the connection between the two but i'm wondering if that may have done it. Also, when i try to reinstall, ( or repair IE ) it's not in my add/delete program. When I try to reinstall, it says there is a previous installation not complete. No matter how many times I try to complete it always fails and says to restart, and every time i go to microsoft upgrades it tells me i need Ie 6 with Service Pack 1, ( which i have already downloaded previously. Although i've had no other problems with IE expept this problem. If infact it's related with my IE upgrade. How do I get a previous version? And will it write over the one i have, or jsut add it. Maybe this will fix my problem. Never thought about it.. what do you guys think??

    Thanks again Lolli

Well that kinda puts another angle on things...

This could be a solution to why IE6 doesn't install correctly:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;221475&Product=ie600

And uninstalling/rolling back to a previous version of IE is covered here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293907&Product=ie600

    [Edit] Oh I see you're at IE5.5 - disregard that 2nd link

See this is wierd, I went to the first link, did as it said in that Windows Setup folder, ( it says to restart set up for IE 5 ).. Only set up I have is for IE 6. So do I need to re-download IE 5. I've had IE 6 and service pack one before and I have (thought to) repaired it at one time, I dont know what happend to it. And like i said when i click the IE 6 setup.. Says previous installation is not complete. To continue ( which fails ) or the other option to start from the begining, both dont work. What now?

    Thanks lolli
