following some advice from this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=65505

I decided to try and upgrade the chipset drivers on a laptop that seems to have responded poorly to an Windows XP Service Pack 2 upgrade. I'm just not sure if I really upgraded anything. I went to the is website

    http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009247.htm
Use the utility to identify the chipset in question and then downloaded the Graphics driver that was available for that chipset ( it was IntelĀ® 845 Chipset Family if you are interested) . It seems to have helped but how can I find out if my drivers are really up to date?

Did you also install the actual IntelĀ® Chipset Software Installation Utility and not just the Graphics Driver?

also what sorts of issues or poor response are you getting from your laptop? ( also give us as much info on Make, Model number/name, CPU speeds etc you can as these will help )

If you need to know info about whats inside your PC thisn this free app will help Everest Home Edition

Another port of call for any updated drivers in the manufacturers website of your laptop.
