Portable apps seem a good solution to HD clutter I have downloaded a few but, never been sure how to set them up. If I purchase some software. Can I make it portable? ( meaning purchased boxed software )

By its very definition, a portable app is a program that will run "stand alone" without having to be installed "In To" Windows.
An example would be any DOS program.

There are a number of programs that have been specially written to run from a CD or Flash Drive, with no real attachment to Windows.

But any program that you have to install 'IN TO' windows, will not run "Stand Alone".

    Does that make any sense?

If you've downloaded a portable application then you probably need to unzip the file. Usually you will get a folder with a few files one of them being an executable. Just click on the executable and it will run.

You might also want to download the PortableApps.com Platform and install it on your flash drive. It provides a small menu panel that can be used to open portableapps programs; kinda neat, in my opinion.

Or, you could download the Suite Light or Suite Standard; they include a bunch of portable apps. This is an option to downloading single apps one-at-a-time; of course, if you aren't interested in the apps included in the suites, then it makes no sense to opt for a suite.
