Torch fuel? Heck no, we had cheap gas! :-D Or did we I can't remember. Hey Rikky, get off my lawn! :-D:-D

I can remember when I was a kid going to a gas station with my Mom.

An attendant would come out dressed in a nice uniform, come around to the side
of the car and greet my mom by name!!

I think he would ask, 'fill it up today, Mrs. xxx?' and she would probably say 'yes'.

The the attendant would start pumping the gas and then come back around and ask,
'would you like me to check under the hood, Mrs xxx?'

    They always cleaned the windshield.

Not sure if she used a credit card back then, but she paid the attendant directly.

All done with a smile and a 'Thank You'.

We never got out of the car.

I know the price was less than 50¢ per gallon.

Oh, and BTW, I guess I'm what they call 'middle aged', but I'm far from being a dinosaur.

I remember those days. It was called full service. A lot of times the man that filled your car with gas, owned the service station.

    But, you pay for service.

$3.89/gallon for the lowest octane here. Highest octane is over $4.00 (No, I don't bother buying that one!) I think it was last summer we hovered near $4.50/gallon for the lowest octane...

I'm 31 and remember the full service stations, too! As a matter of fact, in several stations it was ONLY full service. Later, you had the option of full service (which cost more) or self service. And eventually, I saw full service fade away completely.

Well all those farm subsidy payment now go to grow corn. Only not for feed, but diverted to the ethanol malaise and that is driving food prices up very very fast.

Then someone got mad in Tunisia and here we are in a fine mess of things.

And they took over Government Motors with no Sport Ute or full V8 Holden here. We won't see the Ford Ranger either.

I agree sikvik, and dont know about your public transport costs but here its expensive, I was in London last week and the train down was £235 return, and then a tube return ticket was £8 (ok it was a day ticket) but I needed two days worth so journey was £251, likely compaired with me driving and say two tanks of fuel at £120 so public transport and it high cost is not luring folk to it.

London is very good for transport being on time as far *** I can see but locally its not!!

OUCH thats a large hike, and a lowish OCT/RON also, dont think we have gas at that level most is 95RON or 98RON, so would imagien if you bought that OCT rating it would be way over $4

Plus the gloom and doom is being banded around the press for higher prices by the year end http://news.sky.com/skynews/Article/201103115946140

David, 87 octane is pretty much the standard here. We cal that 'Regular' then you bump up to 'Mid-Grade' then 'Premium' It has been so long since I got anything above the Regular, I am not sure what the octane is... 89 for mid, 90 for Premium I think. Google says... 87-91 octane in the US. :-D

Maybe we should be doing some speculating? :-D

I love how they always have the 'unexpected demand' of summer, and the 'unexpected demand' in the winter. You know, summer is hot, people go on vacation, so they drive more. And then the you know cold part of winter... You would think by now they could anticipate some of these things.

  18. Rikky

I've often wondered that.Fill up a 25,000 gallon container now then sell it to people in a few years.

Its basically the same as what the big companies do with everything else where demand is rising while stocks are dwindling.

It would funny,a truck drives up and fills the station then you drive up with a truck and empty the station then refuse to sell it to people :-D "Economics is a Bitch!"

  19. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Well Rikky, you got a truck? My guess is if we buy some now, we can sell it pretty soon at a pretty good rate of return. :-D Maybe buy some now in the east, then wait a bit, and take it to CA and make some big bucks.

Economics are not a 'bitch', they is fun. :cool

I spotted this in Way Off Base today.
As our Aussie fuel is now around AU$1.50 per litre, I needed a conversion calculator to convert litres to US gallons. I found this on-line calculator,

    Gallons to Liters Conversion
    http://gallonstoliters.com/index.php?q=1&from=us&to=lit&result=

AUD$ price is 3.7854117 x AUD$ 1.50, equals our price per US gallon = USD$ 5.68. And thats for our cheapest octane rating. :cry

    A bit of background info.
We, in OZ, would love to be paying USD $4 per US gallon. :-D

You don't want middle Eastern countries invaded to secure energy needs?Stop complaining about the price of fuel then.If all our politicians ever hear are complaints about the over priced fuel as soon as some cheap oil presents itself of course they send in the troops:major

I share your experiences and your point of view, for the most part. And I will posit that your sentiments are probably shared my most people around the world. The objection I was making was to a perceived bias in the statement about "lighting them up". That connotes that those people whose only natural resource is oil are some how less deserving of it than we are.

Let's not make this a thread about that issue. It would be a shame to close the thread.

Funny story, (hopefully to you as well as me!)

We've been on holiday to Florida the last two years, both times scheduled for a Shuttle launch and both times missed :( (another story!)

The last time we were there, I treated myself with the car hire:

Now, I had a lot of fun with this car, even though it was 'only' the V6 for tourists, not the proper V8. After running it almost empty, we had to fill up for the first time. After pulling up to the pumps, I realised I had to pay before filling up, this is completely different to the UK where you pay afterwards. I had no idea whatsoever how much fuel the car would take and what it would cost. I thought to myself, I'll stick $30 in it and that will give me an idea of how much I need to put in to fill it up. You probably can't imagine my surprise when $30 would only just fit after the pump clicking off a couple of times!

I currently have this (it does have a front grill now, that was just after I bought it):

This is a big comfortable diesel that has aircon, cruise, electric memory seats and all the rest, more toys than the Mustang and can still do 45mpg (imperial gallons). Right now, it will cost me £105 to fill up from empty! That's why I've just bought one of these:

which will do more than 100mpg even if it won't have the aircon and the comfort of the car!

The moral of the story (and it wasn't just so I could show off my pictures) is that until American cars can start showing decent fuel economy, I find it difficult to empathise with your worry over fuel costs!

My car gets around 26 MPG. Plus, we are a bit larger of a country. There is no way for me to get to work other than to drive my car. Use my car for work deliveries as well. It is a different culture, and a big difference between a Mustang, and a normal sedan. ;) And I think we learned that imperial gallons are less than US gallons.

"10 gallon [UK] = 12.009 499 255 gallon [US, liquid]" I think that is right, sorry if it is not.

Yep, you are correct, Fred_G. UK gallons are roughly 20% less than US gallons. ;). Actually I suppose we really should say that 12 US gallons is approx 10 UK (imperial) gallons, for the same amount of fuel. :confused

One reason, I think, that Australia switched to metric is that AU$1.50 per litre seems a hell of a lot cheaper than around AU£6.75 per Imperial gallon :-D as it would be now.

Define the 'subsidies'. Is that money given to the companies, or are they allowed to keep more of their profits?

Are corporate profits bad? Do they not employ thousands of taxpayers?

How much per gallon does the government collect in taxes? Should the government reduce it's take?

Why won't the government allow us to drill in the Gulf, and in Alaska? While we subsidies (give taxpayer money to) Brazil so they can drill?

    http://www.google.com/search?client...rceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest

Does big oil do any business outside of the US where they might make a profit? And, why is profit bad?

Who is massively in debt, the government, or the oil companies? Who could learn from whom?

    http://www.usdebtclock.org/

Ever look how much and what 'Big Gubment' spends per year? All from tax dollars. While we borrow money to pay in interest on our debt. Think about that. Say you can't pay your minimum payment on your CC. Do you go to the bank, and take out a loan to pay the minimum payment?

Can you raise your 'debt ceiling'?

    http://www.heritage.org/budgetchartbook/entitlements-historical-tax-levels

We 'had' to bail out GM. Now, how much did they pay in taxes this year?

  50. Rikky

The main problem with the amount of profit they make is that fuel is a necessity, most people have no choice but to use a car to get around so effectively its just like an extra tax,but instead of it going to the government it goes to private investors.Oil also makes the world go round so any extra profits made on oil hike everything else up especially things like food and even clean water worsening the situation.

Profits aren't a bad thing, they are a good things they give something for company to strive for which keeps them competitive and gives the consumer freedom of choice. The difference between oil/gas and the product market is the oil companies aren't really creating a product for consumption, they're exploiting a finite natural resource.

If it were a fair world natural resources would belong to the planet or the nation in which they belong and they would be distributed to benefit the people of that nation or the world.I'm not talking communism, companies should still be able to make profits but most of the profits should be used to benefit the people of the area to build up infrastructure to support the people of that area for time when the natural resource has been totally expelled.

You may say that this is how it works now,an oil company moves in and infrastructure around the site accumulate, but the moment the oil stops flowing is the minute the area dies, everything is left as it eats away at profits doing things like cleaning/removing the wells, everybody loses their job and the area is more often than not left polluted beyond usability.

So IMO profits are great they drive the world but where finite natural resources that are necessary to our survival are concerned we should be using a better system and its a our Darwin given right to whine and moan about it.:-D

Hope your enjoying your Sunday Fred, you have the perfect excuse to stay at your computer and argue with me and avoid all that nasty sunshine now :-D
