How should you scan PDF files?

I have some PDF files given to me and I want to know how I can be sure that these are not infected with a virus, etc. I'm not too familiar with what security issues I should worry about with this file type and could not find a good answer with some searching online.

I scanned the directory of files with MSE (no problems found) and then I generally only open other people's stuff (ie PDF's) in a sandbox.

I have the latest update for Adobe Acrobat.

I assume that anything with a URL in a PDF should not be clicked on.

Is there anything else I can/should do?

    Thanks!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You can scan individual files with your antivirus program ( as you said you did with MSE ) and you can also goto either of the below websites and have the files scanned with several dozen scanning programs

Yes you should always be careful not to click on embedded links unless you are sure they are safe.
