guys i have a botched Windows 10 install that really confused the users file system. However, the old program files etc documents, all, are OK. just cannot boot. I do not know where the prior Windows 7 registry goes when 10 tries to "upgrade" and fails. Do you?

At any rate, I need to find the Product key code for MSO. is Nirsoft capable of doing this on a drive that is non-bootable? Do I need to do anything to un-mask the old registry and if so, how?

Non-booting computers can often be fixed. If you are interested in going down that road give us as much info as you can as to what, if anything, is actually happening when you try to boot and how far it got with the upgrade.

Well now you've got it going you can use a keyfinder program - try Belarc Advisor

Produkey won't work on every version of Office; but, it will work on a non-booting (or attached to another PC) drive as I have done it, many times.
In Produkey, you do File -> Select source and use the option to navigate to the drive\folder you want to use. The old installation is in Windows.old.
It may also be useful to look at <drive-letter>:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office as it will list the version on every version 2003 or newer in the names. If its 2013 or newer, the guy has a Microsoft account that will let him reinstall it if he logs in.

Chatted Microsoft and badgered them for 45 minutes and they replaced the Key. All good
