how to get images from movies

Hallo
I am trying to get images from movies. I mean to pause the movie, press print screen, and get image in paint. Hoever, that dosen't really work because i cannot save the image that coresponds to the movie, getting a black box in that area. I tryed to decrease the hardware acceleration from display properties, advanced, troubleshoot. But the problem is that i get some small squares like here. Is there some way to get the corect image?

Windows Movie Maker will create still shots from these supported video formats:

asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

 

freeware (completely clean) IrfanView will let you use Print Screen then save in any graphics format, from most audio & video formats. i've never done it with movies (only did it with my screensaver), but movies are supported...huge list of formats at their site. also, supports windows 9x thru 7.

i've been using it for YEARS and i absolutely love it.

I see you are using VLC, why not use the in-built picture taking ability? See pic. It save a .png to your 'my pictures' folder.

 

infan view and movieMaker don't work with all video formats, but that snapshot is of great help.
