Hey, I read on someone's post recently that msconfig wasn't a good way to keep things from starting at startup. How would I keep quicktime from doing this? Also winamp... thanks

The easy and best way is to let HJT remove the startup entries. If you want to do so let me know and I will guide your thru it.

I have had a lot of success using HijackThis, and it is an easy to use program. I would agree with aLLiKZar in part though, because it can also be easy to remove things that shouldn't be removed.

In your case though, I think HijackThis would work great, because you are only looking to kill 2 specific startup processes.

Using msconfig only unchecks it where it doesnt start, it does NOT remove the startup entry as HJT does! Thats why I added "I will guide your thru it" so we wouldnt have to worry about that ;)

SpywareGuard (a great freeware program) alerts you each time a program tries to change it's setting to start up at boot. It asks you if you want to allow this change. Most programs have setting buried in them to resolve problems like yours but this handy tool is much easier and takes care of all birds with one stone!

This wouldnt be any good for there problem as the startup entries already exist.

I know HJT can be tricky at times but I agree with bjgarrick. This is exactly how I remove startup entries of this kind.

As we are only removing 2 here it does seem the way to go.

Quick time and winamp both have settings to disable it from running at start up. Check the program settings/options/preferences (can't recall exactly what it is listed under so look under one of those) and untic the option to run at startup.

Also, an easier method to using msconfig is Startup Control Panel where you can easily disable items. Startup Monitor is also a great utility that will alert you when anything tries to register to run at startup at which point you are prompted with a pop-up and have to choose yes or no to allow it or not.

Fogot to add that both of these aps are small in size and freeware.:)
