How to store backup DVDs so they STAY readable?

    Dear Anyone.

I'm backing up data onto DVDs. I'm burning them with CD Burner XP. They seem to burn OK, I've got data verification on and they verify OK - then if I need to use them a few weeks later they're all being read with huge difficulty, if at all.

I'm storing the DVDs in little plastic pockets and in a dark drawer to keep them away from unnecessary light. Why aren't they reading back? Is it a writer problem (but then they're verifying OK every time I write to them in the first place) or what is it? I mean, if you can't rely on DVDs to hold data securely, does that mean you have to keep buying and filling up expensive hard drives?

    Yours puzzledly

    ulrichburke.

The way you are storing them has nothing to do with your problem, I dont believe you had a good burn in the first place or your reader is going south. Try burning something for a test, dont assume they are ok, put back in burner and see if they can be read. ed

You can try to burn at the lowest speed and see if that makes any difference but it does sound like the laser in the burner has weakened over time.

DVD burners (IDE or SATA interfaces) are $20-$25 at Newegg.com if you want to replace it.
