HP dvd burner cannot detect dvd

Hi I am having a strange problem with my dvd burner (HP dvd 400i) I could open CD and VCD but with dvd it could not even detect the disc. I am puzzle why it could not burn even a CDR during simulation it went on successfully it is during the last process, that is lead in / lead out that it failed. i have tried with a few cdr of different brand and installed other burning software for tried it also failed. I am using the latest nero 66013,my OS win xp. I have save a log it is rather long list if require I will post it. I hope someone please help me. Thanks.
