    HP Pavilion g7-1167dx Notebook PC.
    Purchased for grandson in 2011.
Original OS Win 7... approximately 3 months ago he upgraded to Win 10.
When I became involved the unit would power on but no fan sound or air flow.
I disassembled, blew/cleaned fan and powered up with F2 for diagnosis.
F2 memory test and F3 run test both pass but say, "no HD".
Ran F4 HD test and got error 03FO.
Removed, unplugged and re-plugged HD in case of loose connection.
Reran F4 and again got error 03FO.
Shut down and powered up again, F10 start and checked bios setting for cd drive.
Inserted 1, 2 and 3 recovery disks. Took 1 hour 45 minutes to recover.
I immediately began to update and the HP installer installed.
After 15 or so updates unit just shut down.
Fan is running fine with no hot spots evident on case surface and discharged air feels warm but normal.
Now when I power it up, the fan runs, the HD runs for a moment, the CD tray clicks and then the unit shuts down.
Will not F2 start for d'x or F10 start to bios.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks ahead of time.

    HI

Sadly hard drives do go bad and especially in laptops, but try and take the HDD out and slave it to a desktop and see if the data is accessible, or do you get errors?
Also reading HP website on the 03FO error, some suggestions are to make sure the BIOS is at latest version for your model, so see if you can enter the BIOS and check the version, also while there check the boot order and make sure the HDD is recognised.

    HI

    And thanks for answering...
I was able to get a boot with recovery disk #1 and downloaded what he had saved.
Then I opened in 'Safemode' for all the following: looked at 'device mgr' which showed HD working properly. Then I attempted to run 'chkdsk' which failed. Then I opened 'diskmgmt' which showed status as 'healthy 451.96 GBs. Then I ran 'sfc /scannow' which showed 'no integrity violations'. Then I downloaded 'Malwarebytes from MG and ran a full scan of C: which showed 'no threats'. then I booted F10 and ran both 'short and long' HD test which both passed.
    Motherboard problem?????

    Hi

So if you continue to be able to boot into Safe Mode now and the laptop works fine no boot errors, and would this still be via the recovery disk or can you just F8 - Save Mode boot? or can you now boot into Normal Mode?
I was thinking it was a boot loader issue, as in a Master Boot Record issue, but are you getting any error messages at boot at all? but if the laptop does boot ok in any mode then if its still shutting down as mentioned in first post, then boot to safe mode and leave the machine running to see if it shuts down, if not, I'm sort of thinking a software issue as in a 3rd party program, so use msconfig to disable all startups and boot into normal mode and check for this shutdown.

Reason I'm thinking its software and something that starts with the laptop is in some cases not all programs are compatible with Win10 (or are you back at Win7 as you used the 3 recovery disks) and some install driver components as in security app, so one of these could cause a PC to reboot or shutdown.

    UPDATE:
    Hi David...
When I was able to boot with the recovery disks I took it back to Win 7... Note: While it was updating I was out of the room and it shut down. Now I cannot get it to boot at all.
When I power up the fan runs, the HD runs for a moment or two and the CD/DVD responds.
The only LEDs lighting are the power button, the wireless key and power in in the side.
As all diagnostics showed HD passed I think there is a mother board problem... possibly the video chip due to over heating as there appears to be a lot of this shown on the internet.
FYI... I can currently power it up and it will stay on over night.
I found a tested mother board with a 30 day return policy for $80 and think I will order it.
    Opinion please?
    Bruce
