I just want to ask you fine folks, have you ever seen malware that drops in LOCAL DNS servers?

    Such as 192.168.8.86?

Yes there have been quite a few DNS hijackers, but that local IP network has not been one of them. We have even seen many hack routers DNS setting which requires a factory reset or a reflashing to correct.

Yeah, I am an idiot. The server is hijacking the clients for some reason (even though I never set it up that way).

Silly kids at the office been messing with it looks like.

Sorry to take up your time, friend.

    Not a problem! ;)

Another one we have seen is when private network issues come up where people thought they were hacked and could not get an external IP. The problem is typically another piece of equipment setup as a DHCP server that sending out 192.168.x.x addresses. Having multiple DHCP is trouble.
