I made all the HijackThis mistakes - any chance to repair them?

Well, I was short on time and filled with irritation and basically did every classic hijackThis noobie mistake. Ran it straight from the zip file, deleted the zip from the desktop after marking many of the items for removal...
didnt check to realize there was no backup file etc etc etc.

Of course Norton isnt working too well now. The only saving grace has been that I found the notepad from one of the original scans. Is it possible to go back and manually enter the various things I have erased? Is this advisable?

Should I post the original notepad and a recent one so someone can advise me on what to replace from the things I have zapped?

My original problem, which still exists, is that HP has put something in my new pavillion laptop which continually resets my homepage to the HP site, no matter which redirection preventors I tried. I have since discovered the tabs function on IE 7, after I messed with the HijackThis, so now it is set up to open a few tabs on startup, one being the HP site of course, and a few of sites I normally visit as well. An ugly workaround, but I can live with it.

Any advice on getting Norton back up and remedying other problems I have not found would be greatly appreciated.

That's why everyone says HJT is for advanced users ;)

Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

Yes... I definitely should have waited and read everything about HJT first. The site I downloaded HJT from didnt really have anything like the writeups that you have here.

Do you think there is any point to post the two different logs and determine if I have lost anything really important?

EDIT: added the notepads rather than waiting..

That version of HJT hasn't been uses in several years, you need to update that.
