I recently bought a new computer after my old one was on its last legs, and 'graduated' from my tried and trusted XP to Win 7. Now, every so often I get the message "Internet Explorer has stopped working ... will have to close."

Any idea what causes this? Unfortunately I am a total ignoramus regarding operating systems, but I can pass this on to my son who is away at present as he is my 'techie' that keeps my system running.

    Thanks in anticipation!

    Hi Kim :)
I would assume you have internet explorer IE8 installed on your laptop you can check this by going to tools/ about internet explorer if you IE8 then i would suggest you download and install IE9 from the windows update site (start/widows update) as that may well correct your fault

Thanks a ton for the quick reply – my son has downloaded IE 9 and at this stage of the fight it SEEMS to be doing all right – no glitsches and no messages re: ‘...stopped working...’ so far. Of course, I am still trying to navigate my way through Win. 7 after many years on my tried and trusty XP, which can be a challenge at my age (77!) but what the heck – perhaps in another 100 years I’ll be totally familiar with this new format – who knows?

Thanks again for the much appreciated advice!

If this continues to work, then great. However, Internet Explorer 9 is not 100 percent compatible on all sites. We are using it here in the IT Department testing it, and there are some sites where pages don't display right.

If you continue to have problems, PM me for some alternative solutions.

Hi, motc7, so far everything seems ok, but then I'm not heavily into IT - I just use the basics - downloading or sending mails, visiting forums I'm registered on, looking at news sites - nothing really drastic which could possibly cause problems, but if I do have any, I will certainly make use of your kind offer and PM you for further advice.

Just as a matter of interest, in which sites don't pages display correctly? Perhaps I could pass any such info on to my son who is heavily into IT - he's leaving a site in the far north of the country tomorrow so I won't be seeing him for at least two months, but I'm sure he'd also appreciate any good tips.

    Many thanks!
