    Hi,

A virus has almost totally taken over my PC.

It started about 3 days ago by disabling my AVG8 (it starts up and says 'no active components') and tries to install a bogus anti-virus - Paladin. Then pop-ups, warnings etc

I upgraded to AVG9, but it was prevented from installing properly ('as it didn't get a proper response while installing the service').

It also hijacked Firefox by redirecting search results to malware pages.

However, I managed to 'clean' the PC by going to Safe Mode and running AVG in command mode. The virus it identified was SHeur2.CKAE. It did not fix the FF hijack.

While researching the fix for FF, yesterday I inadvertently clicked a link from a search result and instantly was thrown back to where I started, but worse.

This has tried to install Antivirus PC 2009 and then IS2009. It changed the background of the desktop and selected all icons!! It disabled Taskmanager and prevents most programs from launching. A proper mess!

A lot of these symptoms were also evident in Safe Mode. Running AVG9 in Safe Mode did not solve the problem. Although it found a virus - hxendii.exe (Generic16.AVOL). However I managed to run regedit and enable the Taskmanager.

I tried both times to revert to an earlier snapshot - without success, it just would not run after selecting the date to revert to.

I can now run in standard mode by deleting tasks after boot (and re-enabling task manager). However, I am no closer to fixing the root cause.

    My machine is:
    XP Pro SP3 32bit X86
    1GB RAM

I followed the procedure with only a modicom of success:
    I successfully ran CCleaner
Malwarebytes failed to download - server not found - tried all the servers
    Combofix - likewise
When I ran SuperAntiSpyware it encountered a problem and had to close
Couldn't get the Combofix run instructions - server not found
    RootRepeal ran OK
MGtools ran for a bit and then crashed Windows.

    Not a great run!

    I have attached
    RRlog.txt
    MGlogs.zip

    Thank you for you time.

    Hi,

Can I do this from Safe Mode? Since I posted, I can't seem to stay in normal mode without the PC spontaneously resetting!

    Thanks

Nope. Sorry, I launched RootRepeal, but after running for a minute the system reset.

I was looking around earlier and noticed the same thing if I tried a search in explorer. I seem to be able to manually poke around with explorer, however.

One other note. When the system now boots, a dialogue box comes up titled "Spyware Alert" and says I have Worm.Win32.NetSky detected. I don't know if this is a bogus notice, but the system won't complete the boot until it is acknowledged.

    Any suggestions?

Do I delete these files manually?

    thanks
    David

    Further to my last post.

The PC has been sitting around all day in Safe Mode quite happily.

I can use Explorer to look around the file system without any problems - big directories, small directories, ones with lots of stuff inside. It seems, though, as soon as I try to access System32 in C:\Windows, the system crashes!

I have tried this several times with the same result. I can even look around the Windows directory, as long as I don't touch System32!?

To keep you going, try this, if you cannot run it, we can try deleting the problem files we see with avenger, however that may not be successful either. But there are other options.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the new instructions.

In the meantime, I have managed to delete all of the mentioned files using a Linux boot disk.

I have now rebooted in safe mode and am currently running rootrepeal. So far the original files seem to have dissappeared (as you would expect), but there are some other suspicious files that are sited as 'not being visisble to the API'.

They all start with _VOIDxxxxxxx in the Windows/system32 directory.

    What should I do?

    David

Run RootRepeal, and all of the other tools that were meant to be run from our Read and Run Me First procedures. Attach logs and await instruction. If one step does not run please do not stop, continue on, note down any errors and keep going. :)

The RootRepeal scan finished - here is the log.

To continue, it is going to be a bit difficult in Safe Mode and 'run only from the desktop' is a bit difficult.

OK, I wiped the _Voidxxxx files displayed by RootRepeal and then ran SuperAntiSpyware. This identified a bunch of threats. At the end I let it delete everything it needed and it reboot.

On reboot, instead of going directly to the desktop, it comes up with my login icon. When I click that it starts the desktop and immediately closes down. I can't get to the desktop!

    What next?

    Thanks

I still can't start windows in normal mode or safe mode to run the rest of the programs (or at least access the desktop).

Attached is a list of files that have been recently modified in C:\WINDOWS\system32

I have tried replacing winlogon32.exe, but everytime I do that it gets deleted next time I try to start windows.

    Thanks for your help.

Boot to the recovery console using your XP cd.

    At the command-prompt, type

    "expand d:\i386\userinit.ex_ c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe"
    "expand d:\i386\winlogon.ex_ C:\windows\system32\dllcache\win32\winlogon.exe"
    "expand d:\i386\csrss.ex_ C:\windows\system32\dllcache\win32\csrss.exe"
    "expand d:\i386\System32.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\System32.exe"

Note: D: = Drive letter of your CD/DVD drive.

Now see if you can boot.

    Hi, Thanks for your help.

I managed to boot into the recovery console with the XP CD.

When I tried the expand command, I get:
    "Unable to create file userinit.exe"

I can create a tmp directory in c:\windows OK, but I can't expand any file into it - I get the same error.

I can copy a file into the tmp dir.

I can also delete the tmp dir.

So it looks like the filesystem is writable.

    Have I done something wrong?

    Thanks
    David

Oops! I have never used recovery console before and I followed the instructions to the letter.

After a little digging around, I realised the syntax was incorrect. I have now recovered 3 files - userinit.exe, winlogon.exe & csrss.exe. system32.exe is not on the CD, nor does it exist in the existing windows\system32 directory, so I ignored it.

I tried to reboot with the same result i.e. on initial boot the desktop starts and immediately shuts down and gives me the user login icon. If I try to login, the desktop starts to appear, then immediately shuts down again.

    Thank you

My PC is now stable and I have managed to complete the run all of the programs. The SAS log is already in a previous post.

    Errors:
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
said "An error occurred. Please report... Error code: 732(12007,0)"
    and then continued to run

    ComboFix
Could not shutdown AVG9 so aborted ComboFix, uninstalled AVG9 and re-ran ComboFix.
ComboFix could not install the recovery console

    MGtools
An error appeared "ProcessDll.exe - Application has generated an exception that could not be handled"
    Clicked OK and continued.

    Attached are the logs

    Thanks

    Good to know!! :)

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_13"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Are you on a domain that uses this:
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.162.103,93.188.166.85
If so, delete them from the HJT fix.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    9K3P96UA0

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\fiosejgfse.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\mswintmp.dat
    c:\windows\ttmp
    c:\windows\system32\orhun.exe
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\mswintmp.dat
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\9K3P96UA0.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for your help.

    Followed that lot.

Was ComboFix meant to reboot Windows? Because it did, but did nothing after the restart. I can't find the C:\combofix.txt log.

    Continued with the instructions.

MGtools had the same error as yesterday:
"ProcessDll.exe - Application has generated an exception that could not be handled"
    Checked OK and continued.

Haven't seen any virus activity since running the scans yesterday.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Avenger may have been giving a false positive. Keep an eye on things for a few days and let me know if any issues persist. In the meantime:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
