    Hey

Basically what I got is a computer that hooked up through wireless internet. But the internet speed seems to be all over the place. Some times it’s really fast and other times it’s really slow.

When the internet is slow on the wireless computer, the computer that’s not on wireless isn’t slow.

I personally think my wireless router is on the blinks buts I want another opinion. Or could this be an issue with my computer?

Basically what i got is a Dell Wireless Router not sure the make and my USB wireless adapter for my computer is Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter.

Any help would be great thanks.

If you left the router and adapter with their default settings you should not have many problems. More information is needed to be able to make any recommendations.

Do you have any security, WEP, enabled? If so is it 64 0r 128 bit?
What channel do you have selected?
What does the LinkSys pop-up box tell you your signal strength is?
Do you live in an apartment, is this an office, or a house?

If you don't have the WEP Security set-up you may hosting multiple outside internet users through your router and that would definitely slow it down.

I just went through a similar set-up just yesterday.

Yes its setup at a WEP 128 bit

    I think its channel 6

The Signal is Very Good. But sometimes it says Excellent and i basically got no speed.

You might want to change the Channel from the default of 6 to 9 or 10. The technology used is supposed to keep any interference to a minimum. But, like yesterday, I changed the channel from the default of 6, which everyone leaves set as the default, to channel 10 and that fixed the problem we had.

I had also changed the default transmit key from 1 to 2.

    Hope this helps.

A lot of cordless phones and even some cell phones can interfear with the wireless signal regardless of the channel you have selected in the router. Getting off channel 6 is certainly adviseable for interference from other routers but it's not the only source. I had to move my cordless phone base stations to the other end of the house from my router to maintain a good connection.
