    Hi there,

I originally posted this in the software forum, but thought it might be better here.

i first noticed a problem when I tried to download an updated Ccleaner - no go. thought it might be a site problem.

Then I saw in IE, under the tools dropdown, the pop-up blocker and manage add-ons buttons have disappeared. They were there I'm sure the other day, but now there is just a blank space. The pop-up blocker space still has the arrow to expand, but this again just gives a blank box. Also, when I go to Help>about internet explorer, I get a blank box.

I've run Spybot, Ad-aware, AVG free, cw shredder & bitdefender. Nothing found.

Problem is, my machine will now not download anything at all, so cannot do panda scan or download HJT to post a log, or any other recommendation in the Read Me.

I'm getting desperate now, any help appreciated.

    Thanks

Done a system restore, which seems to have worked. If anyone can advise what went wrong, I would appreciate it.

As this hapened shortly after doing scans, etc. I'm sure glad I didn't clear the system restore right away.

Now I'll have to start again and try to figure out what went wrong. Not being able to download, for some reason made me feel like I'd lost control. lol (maybe not).

This does not sound completely like a malware problems, but they only way we will know if you have malware is if you complete the READ ME and attach the requested logs.

    Running XP Home

I've run all scans again, Spybot, Adaware, bitdefender, CWShredder and all were clear. However I now keep getting a virus alert from AVG saying "While opening file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\CsdDriver.sys PSW.Generic2.IGX".

After much difficulty I think I have attached HJT, Bitdefender, newfiles.txt and runkey.txt logs. It kept giving me upload error when I tried to attach them.

Thanks very Much for your help.

Here are the HJT Bitdefender and runkeys.txt logs, had a problem attaching them. If I try and upload newfiles IE encounters an error and closes.

    thanks

You must not use MSconfig to control startups. Please read and follow ALL of the directions in step 7 of the READ ME. You MUST be in Normal Startup mode not Selective Startup mode. Please attach new logs from HJT and GetRunKey after you stop using MSconfig to control startups. I also need the ShowNew log. If you are having problems attaching logs, please explain the problems. Remember you can only attach a maximum of three logs to a single message.

    Hi There

Managed to get all the scans done. The pop-up from AVG for Generic2.IGX seems to have stopped, although it then found another type of PSW.Generic2., so there would still appear to be a problem.

I've done the 'Read Me' exactly, although it did take a couple of days and I had to kick my wife off the machine to complete them.

I'va attached all the requested logs along with ewido's as that found some stuff.

    Thanks for having a look.

First install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Are your copies of Ewido and CounterSpy the free trials or paid versions? If free, uninstall them now.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\System\panels\blank.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\System\panels\blank.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O21 - SSODL: UpperHost - {523455E4-ABCD-ABCD-1114-D709ADD3DDAB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\UpperHost.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\UpperHost.dll

Additional step to delete files in the Downloaded Program Files folder :
    - Click Start, Run, and enter cmd in the box and click OK. This opens a command prompt windows.
    - Enter the following command lines each followed by the enter key
    cd C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\
    attrib -r -h -s f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf
    del f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf
    exit

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

    Now reboot in normal mode
Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixWLK.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\Local Settings\temp

Now attach a the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the assistance Chaslang.

Did everything that was asked and all seemed to work Ok, except I couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\system32\UpperHost.dll to delete.

When deleting from the C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder there were three items from today, but funnily enough it did allow me to delete them, but I restored them. They are WGANotify.settings Mpsigstub.log and WGAErrlog.txt.

Everything seems to be working and I've attached the logs as requested.

    Thanks

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
