HP Pavilion machine running Windows Vista Home Premium.
IE has been working fine. Until now.
Opera, FF, and Comodo Dragon can all go online, but if I try IE, :web page cannot be displayed" message.
Have tried to install IE 7 and 8. Getting that IE is not supported by the operating system.
    WTH?? Not supported by Windows?
How can I get IE back for this machine?

    Hi

If its a recent thing then try a restore point and see if you can get to a point before this happened, anything new you have installed?

  3. hrlow2

    hrlow2 MajorGeek

    No new installs or removals.
    Got me puzzled.

Go into programs and features in the control panel and look under view installed updates go down the list and uninstall if found then download a fresh copy of IE9

That particular one you show has not been installed.
IE 7 and 8 has so far been rejected.
    Will try 9.

Opens to a white page that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the wenpage".
Below is a box for Diagnosing Connection Problems.
Tells me that there is no problem found with the network connections.

I'm going to ask the obvious, have you tried running a boot-scan anti-virus, and/or malware remover such as malwarebytes?

Can you list or take a picture of what is in Programs and Features (via control panel). Just list any of them that begin with the letter W

I will continue working on this as it's good to get to the bottom of it. As for ie9 not installing yes that has been common for some but for opening and not connecting that's another matter

What i would do is to uninstall your other browsers just to rule out a conflict their and then check ie9 again

  25. hrlow2

    hrlow2 MajorGeek

    Uninstalled all other browsers.
    Made no difference with IE.
Had to reinstall one to get back here to respond.

Try to download ie9 again and see what happens ?also do a anti virus scan to see if that task will complete

    Hi HR

What Service Pack is Vista at and is it fully current with all updates? it likely is as IE9 doesn't install without some pre-requisites but just checking.

Dont think this has been suggested so far and dont know if you'd have tried this, knowing you , its likely you have, but I just want to field it anyways to rule a few things out.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try IE again (do mention what version you are running currently also), any difference?

What security apps do you have installed?

Do you have any 3rd party addons installed that may be for ad blockers, toolbars etc for IE, uninstall if you do have any 3rd party apps installed for IE.

    David:
    Vista is SP2.
Recently got all Windows Updates. Yesterday, in fact.
    Have tried Safe Mode w/Networking.
    Security is as always.
    Comodo firewall
    SpywareBlaster.
    SAS (on demand)
    MBAM (on demand)
    Avira AntiVir (on demand)
    All up to date.

    Hi HR

Any 3rd party addons installed like toolbars, ad blockers?

You still have IE9 installed? Try a Clean Boot as per HERE

If that doesn't highlight anything and get IE working I would uninstall IE and get it back to the original version if possible then we can troubleshoot that version with these, depending on which one you can get back too.

    IE8
    IE7

    Uninstalled 9.
    Rolled itself back to 8.
Now 8 is working, so must have been something in the files, maybe?
    But working. Case closed.

Good stuff hrlow, glad its now working, could have been a corrupt file or issue with any addons you may have installed, so if you are to attempt IE9 again (not that you may) it would make sure all 3rd party addons are removed.

I just thought that I would add that the next time you have connection problems, check your firewall. Of late, most of my connection problems seem to be a firewall problem (PC Tools Firewall Plus). I double check the ISP files in PC Tools and see if they are correct and adjust if not. I also disable it, sign-on and then turn the firewall back on after connected (IF there's a connection). I also try rebooting with the firewall off. Hope that helps someone and glad you resolved your problem. :)
