IE8 toolbar backgrounds blacked out

This is a problem which I have experienced several times. The only way I can correct it is to reinstall IE8. After some time it will reappear.

I did raise this problem on a forum, I forget which, some time ago but don't remember if anyone suggested a cause or a permanent remedy.

The operating system is XP but finances prevent me from getting a recent computer and for that reason there's little point in trying to install a more recent operating system in order to use a corresponding modern verison of IE.

Once XP support ends in a few day's time, although I could still reinstall IE8, I presumably won't be abe to download its updates.

I have Firefox and Chrome installed, but still use IE for most things.

But that's beside the point; I would still like to know what is causing the problem, for something isn't right.

Next time it happens I will try the theme resetting solution.
