iexplore.exe? regscan.exe? & a mystery icon in top left corner of XP Desktop

I've never seen anything like this. Does anyone know what it is? (See
desktop snapshots below). How do I get rid of it?

    The Mystery Icon
    - I can move it around the desktop
    - Double-clicking it has no effect
    - I can't drop it into a folder
    - Right clicking it does not bring up a menu (ie. I can't delete it)
    - It's not visible in Windows Explorer or in the Desktop folder
    - The lower half changes colour or pattern when I move it on top of or
    under something else
    - If I change the colour of the desktop the icon changes colour and
becomes frozen in place (unclickable, immovable) until I reboot,
    whereupon it reappears

    http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l277/xpiconproblem/mystery-icon-3.jpg

The iexplore.exe process runs in task manager on startup without ie open. When I close that process, the 'mystery icon' disappears from the desktop!

    If this is a trojan:

    - I have no idea where I got this from. A dodgy website? I'm travelling in Turkey at the moment and plugging my thinkpad in at a lot of internet cafes. Could someone have attempted to hack my PC?
    - I've been using internet banking, etc. What's the possibility someone has recorded my password keystrokes? Should I be concerned?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I have not seen that funny icon before, but to rule out any malware being the cause and to give you a bit of peice of mind as your using online banking the below guide should be followed and the requested logs attached, please also follow the instructiosn for Hijackthis, as malware has changed and some are not picked up in HJT scans unless its installed and re-named as inthe guide below.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Thanks for your help.

I've run all the scans recommended in 'READ ME FIRST', but the problem remains. I'm sure it has something to do with the files iexplore.exe and/or regscan.exe, because when I shut down the iexplore.exe process the mystery icon disappears.

I have attached the 3 log files.

Did you setup the below ProxyServer setting?
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = PROXY:85

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please bring up Task Manager by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL and click the Processes tab. Look for the below process(es) and if found, End them:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\regscan.exe

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Regscan] C:\WINDOWS\system32\regscan.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\regscan.exe

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

    Now reboot in normal mode
Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixWLK.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now attach a the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Yes, but the setting is no longer required (old proxy server) so I've removed it now.

    I've attached the 3 logs.

It all seems to have gone quite smoothly. The 'mystery icon' is gone now and neither iexplore.exe nor regscan.exe appear in the Task Manager after rebooting.

Thanks very much for your help! You have saved me an incredible amount of trouble.

Is there any documentation on this type of trojan? BDScan detected it as Backdoor.Agent.VY - a new variant of an old backdoor?

I'd like to know where this could have come from. Could someone on the network at a Turkish Internet cafe have planted it on my laptop -- in an attempt to get my bank passwords, etc?

If all is well I will clear System Restore after hearing back from you.

    Cheers,

    GhostFence

Click on all of the tabs in the below link. It may also help to answer where it came from.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
