    I am methodically going throught he steps on "Read and run me first" before posting my problem. When I get to step 4 and try to download both GetRunKey and ShowNew, the download immediately bombs out.

    I think I have something very nasty. I first suspected this when I tried to update my AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Spyware Blaster. All three immediately bombed out. Couldn't run the applications and couldn't run the uninststall on them either.

    This vicious beast even throws me off the net when I try to Google GetRunKey and ShowNew. So far I am in the process of downloading CounterSpy but it is showing a download time of over 1 hour. Seems odd.

    How should I proceed with these limited capabilities? I seem to be thwarted at every turn.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    Then I would have to assume this means you cannot download anything at all. These are very small special utilities developed for our use here on Majorgeeks! There is no sense in Googling them since it will just point you back here. So the question remains.....can you download anything from anywhere?

    Do you have another PC you can use to download to and then copy to a CD, flashdrive...etc? Then you could use that to get the files copied to the problem PC.

    Does your problem PC let you run any of the tools that you already have (like Ad-Aware, Spybot, ad Spyware Blaster) in safe mode?

    Can you run any other applications on this PC?
    Do you have an antivirus application installed? Does it run? Safe mode too?

    It is possible you have either a very nasty malware infection or that you have more problems than malware.

    Make sure you run TaskManager and shutdown ALL unrequired applications and close all windows on your Desktop before trying to download or run any scanners.

    Also tell us what Windows OS you are running?
    Also tell us what problems you were having that prompted you to come here in the first place???

    I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack2.

    My original problem was noticed when I tried to download the most recent definitions for both my Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, and Sybot Search and Destroy - all of which have been working fine till now. All three of them would bomb out within seconds of starting. I cannot open them to use them or to update recent definitions. If I type the address of the web-sites for those applications, I get completely thrown off the net.

    I WAS able to download and run CounterSpy in safe mode as suggested in your Malware Tutorial. It found 007 Keylogger. I quarantined as directed.

    I have McAfee virus protection and it seems fine. Spybot Search and Destroy will run in safe mode, but it finds nothing.

    I just finished running the CounterSpy. And was going to continue on with the tutorial. But maybe I shall await your reply first.

    Update

    Maybe running CounterSpy did the trick. I was just able to update the files for Ad-Aware, Spywareblaster and SB Search and Destroy.

    Will proceed to go through the steps in the tutorial now and see if I can fish out any other lurking bad things. Will et you know if I run into trouble.

    One more question. I have firewalls in both my Windows XP and McAfee. Should I disable one of them? If so, which one?

    Yes run thru the whole procedure and attach all 6 logs when finished.

    Your Windows XP firewall should have been disabled when McAfee was installed. Check to make sure it is disable but it should have been done automatically by McAfee if what you have includes a firewall.

    Here are the Hijack This, Bitdefender, and Panda Active Scan logs.

    Had to run the above in normal boot mode. Couldn't do it in safe mode with networking support.

    Maybe I am a just being a computer moron, but I still can't get GetRunKey and ShowNew to download. Or I should say, in my Download Manager they show up with 0 bits downloaded. Can't find the files (.zip) on my computer with a search either.

    When I click on the attachments (for GRK and SN), I get sent to a window at Major Geeks asking me to login. When I do, I get an IE page saying "cannot connect to this page." So I am stumped.

    Awaiting further instructions.

    That's because you did not check the box that says Remember Me when you logged in. Login again and this time check that box!

    Now see if you can download GetRunKey and ShowNew. Then attach the logs!

    I thought you said you had a problem downloading CounterSpy? I see it installed! Did you run it?

    However note that I'm not seeing any major issues in your logs. I would suspect that your problems are not due to malware but are rather due to improper setup/configuration of all of your McAfee software and with your Parental Controls from Microsoft.
