    So here's the story. I'm surfing the web a couple days ago, nothing out of the ordinary. Didn't download anything or open any emails. In fact, I think I was on Wikipedia at the time. Anyway, my Symantec AV suddenly starts blowing up with these "email scanner" popups, and my system resources started maxing. They filled the screen in seconds, and were popping up faster than I could close them, so I just shut down. Started back up, and within a minute, it happened again. Mad popups, both memory and CPU getting maxed. I unplugged the network cable, restarted again, and was able to stop the pop-ups and restore system performance to normal. Just as a test, and I plugged the network back in and it instantly started freaking out again. Scanned with Symantec, and it found a couple infections. I had been meaning to ditch it anyway, so I uninstalled it and started using AVG instead. Between that and Malwarebytes I cleaned out a TON of stuff that wasn't there before (I scan with Malwarebytes very regularly), so whatever I got was like a cluster bomb of various worms and trojan horses.

    Seems I've gotten rid of the bulk of it, but AVG is still giving notices every 30 min. or so that I've got two infected files in my system drivers folder. It says "ndis.sys" is infected with "Rootkit-Agent.DI" and that "74df2116.sys" is infected with "BackDoor.Generic11.QJJ." Performance-wise, I seem to be up and running again, with internet access on that computer and normal system performance, but those two infected files obviously need to go. Since they're system files, AVG won't touch them. Even if it could, I found upon further inspection they also seem to have altered the permissions for the drivers folder in a way that I can't seem to undo. Any help would be appreciated.

    Let's start with this:

    Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7"
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)"
    Viewpoint Media Player

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\92732406.ini
    C:\305381706

    FCopy::
    c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ndis.sys | c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ndis.sys
    c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ndis.sys | c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks a bunch for the reply. I thought sure I had uninstalled Viewpoint during the the "read and run me first" steps. Weird.

    I followed your instructions and have attached the logs you requested. So far, so good. I haven't gotten any more pop-ups from AVG about the infected files, so that's probably a good sign. My CPU is still frequently spiking, though, and that never happened until this incident. It rapidly jumps up and down, usually hovering in the 10% to 50% area, but also will suddenly slam at 100% for a minute or so before going back down. And this is with me just sitting there watching it, not running any programs or anything whatsoever. So that's a little strange. Like I said, that's a new issue. Usually my CPU idles at around 5-6%.

    Anyway, here are the logs. Thanks again for your help, and please let me know what, if anything, else I should do.

    There is a driver that I cant define, so lets do this:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.

    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    74df2116

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\74df2116.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.

    That seems to have done the trick. Thanks! CPU activity is back to normal, sitting down around 5% or so when inactive. I really appreciate the help. Should I consider myself clean this point, or is there more I should do?

    Darn. It seems I spoke too soon. Within a few hours it went back to its previous state, except it seems even worse now. The CPU hits 100% right from start-up, and just locks up the whole system. What a pain this is.

    I am not seeing any malware in your system. We can do one other thing, but if it doesn't turn up any malware, then you will need to post in the software section and look at controlling your start ups.

    Using BitDefender Online Scan.

    At this point, CPU activity is back to normal. Did the BitDefender scan anyway (log attached), and it came up with a couple things, but it didn't look like anything major. While the scan was running, though, my on-board AV (not bitdefender) popped up a notice that "heur.suspicious@19861345" had been detected and quarantined.

    Not sure what or if I did anything to change it, but if it gets out of whack again, I guess I'll try the software section like you said. Thanks again.

    All that was found was items in your system restore folder. The only way to remove them is to toggle system restore......which we will do shortly.

    I do suggest you pursue this in software as it is not a malware issue, so If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
