    Hi there,

After utilising the services here previously to help out the laptops of a few friends, some of the other school Mum's have asked if the same can be done.

I attach the logs for a WIndows XP 32 bit system that was slowed down considerably due to numerous unwanted programs installed.

Seems t be some redirection occuring and numerous toolbars still installed.

    Thanks in advance.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedirect?o=13149&gct=&gc=1&q=
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedirect?o=13149&gct=&gc=1&q=%s

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java 7 Update 15
    Java(TM) 6 Update 31
    McAfee Security Scan Plus
    PCHealthBoost 2.3.1
    Viewpoint Media Player

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment Make sure that when you see the form asking about installing Ask Toolbar that you uncheck this.

Now run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Seems to be working a lot better thanks.

I could not find the following entry when using HijackThis though:

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1709801122-1423809726-1600334679-500\..\Run: [AVG-Secure-Search-Update_JUNE2013_TB] "C:\Program Files\AVG Secure Search\AVG-Secure-Search-Update_JUNE2013_TB.exe" /PROMPT /CMPID=JUNE2013_TB (User 'Administrator') not found

Was able to do all the other steps.

Google Chrome still had the search engine set to conduit and was set to use conduit search when you type in the bar, but I manually corrected that now.

    Internet Explorer looking good.

    No annoying pop-ups on startups.

No redirections that I can see.

Just have a lot of non malicious programs set to auto start, but I can convince the Mum that all of them aren't needed to auto start or to be in the quick launch by showing her how much qhicker her boot up and usage will be without them !

    :)

    Logs attached as requested.

    :)

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.
Just don't use MSconfig to control them. It is not meant for that purpose. Also do not use CCleaner to control them either ( looks like you are already ). CCleaner and also Glary Tools use the MSconfig registry keys to control startups and they should not be doing this. Those keys belong to Microsoft Windows not to those programs. Use a proper startup manager. See >> Dealing with Startup Processes

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi there,

I only use CCleaner for cleaning, I never use it for the registry. Is there evidence that this user is using CCleaner to control the Registry you say?

All I was planning is disabling the auto start with windows options from the programs themselves, rather than mess around with msconfig or anything else, or, in what I am hopinng is most cases, uninstall the programs as it seems the user does not even use them.

Anyway, I've gone through the steps now, so hopefully she will keep herself protected.

    Thanks once again !

    :)

Yes. Inside of MGlogs.zip there is a file named runkeys.txt that shows the MSconfig registry key and all of the below is shown and this is not being controlled by MSconfig. I expect it is CCleaner or something else.

Thanks for the heads up. It was CCleaner like you suspected. I've re-enabled them all through CCleaner and am now setting them through the programs themselves or uninstalling as appropriate and the system is a LOT more stable !

It is, but Google Chrome doesn't work anymore. Whenever I try to use it, it just spins and spins trying to load, although Internet Explorer is absolutely fine.

I've uninstalled and done a fresh re-install, but to no avail.

    Puzzling...

Try running it directly from the C:\Documents and Settings\Clare Waters\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe file instead of using a shortcut or quicklaunch and see what happens.

If that does not help, uninstall Chrome again and the delete the below folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Clare Waters\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome

    Also delete the below file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Clare Waters\Desktop\Google Chrome.lnk

Then redownload and reinstall from >> Google Chrome

    Thanks there.

    No joy.

There was no Application folder within the C:\Documents and Settings\Clare Waters\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\ folder.

The Chrome.exe It was in the C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application which gave the same response.

When I uninstalled through the Add/Remove programs, both folders were removed.

I reinstalled Chrome from the link, but I have the same result (and Chrome.exe in C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\

    Aha !

It was Comodo Firewall. For some reason there was some conflict between it and Google Chrome on this OS.
