Installation Interrupted (fails)

I am trying to install some software provided by my university which i need to use to do my stats. It is SPSS 12.0. The cd runs fine when it is inserted and the main menu comes up and then you can click 'Install SPSS'. the install wizard does the preparing thing and appears to complete ok but suudenly it shuts down and the window saying installwiard completed. 'the wizard was interupted before it could be installled, no changes have been made....'

I am running XP home SP2 with the usual norton antivirus and mcafee firewall. i have no spyware or viruses and so i see no reason why it shouldn't work.

The installation ran fine on a friends similar computer and i have tried closing as many open applications as possible and even tried in safe mode but it says it cant do it cos i am in safe mode. the system rquirements are way below what my computer runs at. I have a sony Vaio pcg-fr315s with 640ram P4 at 2.66ghz. plenty of free space and stuff.

Anyone have any ideas? if you need more info just ask but this software is the best around for the stats i need to do and just using excel as presently is not feasible for much longer and so i really need to get this sorted soon as. all updates from microsoft are installed etc so i have really run out of ideas. is there anyway to install it differently? i even resorted to making an image of the cd onto my HD to see if it was cd problem but as my friend proved the installation ont he cd is fine so.....

You may need to turn off some or all of these to install the software - just remember to turn it on again afterwards.

 

I have stopped all non essential processes through task manager and it still will not work!! am really stumped as to what is going on but it is really starting to annoy me.... anyone have any more ideas?

Please anyone with even the most stupid ideas can you please post them as i am willing to try almost anything!!!

The IT department are hopeless here!! You have to pay for support unless you get loss of functionality of a uni pc of which mine is not.

Just in case this is thought to b the problem it appears not to be:-

i have already run the ISScript.msi which ran fine but still no change!

 

Finally got so fed up with trying that i took the cheats way out and just formatted my HD and did a complete system reinstall. Thanks for all the help anyhow but i decided my laptop hadn't been spring cleaned since i bought it 18 months ago so i really didnt mind getting rid of all the crap and i now have a nice fast computer again and have got rid of a ton of system junk and have SPSS installed fine first time and it all works fine.

Cheers for all the suggestions and it was only time constraints that meant i couldn't try and solve the problem rather than giving up and taking the easy route out.
