Adding RAM to my computer and I looked at the manual for this computer and purchased exactly the type of RAM they said I could use. The computer is an old DEll XPS Gen 3 and the manual says that it will accommodate 4 1Gig DDR2 SDRAM 533MHxz using 240 pin DIMMs. That is exactly what I purchased. Installed it with no trouble at all and I made sure that the stick that had a 1 on it went in the 1 slot and the other stick went in the 2 slot. Got a black screen and this prompt:

    R423SE P/N 113-A32102-103-8P A12 BR#7891 RE19.3.17

Apparently that is relating to my graphics card (video card). Is there something in the BIOs that I need to change in order for the graphics card to recognize the new RAM?

I unplugged it plugged it back in started it back up and did that a couple of times and nothing. Took out the new RAM put the old RAM back in and it started right up. Anyone have any recommendations?

Try putting the module you put in slot 2 into slot 3 instead. If it still produces your error, there may be a problem with the module itself.

That board has a 925x chipset and supports up to 4 (four) one gigabyte memory modules (PC2-5300) that also; because of its age (2004), probably need to be labeled as low density. If what you bought was more than one gigabyte per memory module, they won't work.
Put the original memory back in and see it work.
Add one of the new modules and see it work again. Take it out and try the other one. If both work separately, try them together; but, remember, you are adding them so leave the originals in place.
