I've been trying to install M$ version of Fax software over the last 24 hours.

First attempt, M$ found that fxsapi.dll was not on my PC and suggested that I insert my Windows XP Professional Service Pack SP2 CD.

First question. Is there a "Professional" SP2 CD, as distinct from the "normal" Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD?

Next, I did a search on my SP2 CD and did not find fxsapi.dll there,

I downloaded it, using google to find it.

    Continued on with the installation.

Passes that point, now it comes up with a missing fxscom.dll.

I can see that this is going to happen many times, with every missing *.dll it finds.

Is there any short way around this?

Can I download a "full" installation of M$ fax anywhere (link would be nice) to save me this death by 1000 cuts installation?

Maybe a link to some other (free, if possible) Fax software, and stuff M$. Bazza

All I want is to d/l a copy of fxsclnt.exe

     :p :(
Title says it all. Talk about a runaround.
In my continuing effort to load M$ Fax, I need a copy of fxsclnt.exe.
I have tried googling. Visited lots of links. Lots of info about it, but nowhere to d/load it.

I got a d/l (with another filename) from M$ but that only applies to SP1.

    It's driving me barmy. Bazza

Bazza ...assume you are trying to install from add/remove windows components ...
If the files are missing, would first run sfc /scannow to repair/replace any of those files ...then try again. Run at least twice.

And itwouldn't be on the sp2 disk ...on the orig. xp disk.

TimW. yep, I am trying to install using Add/Remove. :)

SFC / Scannow won't help ( I think) as I never installed the FAX software, as an option, in the first place.

As I mentioned, the install says missing stuff IS on the Professional (?) SP2 CD.

    I'm

fax software is part of the os just doesn't install when you install the os...and that exe you are looking for isn't on my xp pro anywhere. That is why I think the sfc might help ....

Thanks, plastidust. It shouldn't matter, whether XP Home or XP Pro.
Can you IM me your email address, so I can contact you?

Don't post your email address here, as some nasty people might use it to spam you (not MG members, of course.;) ) Bazza

    TimW, thanks.:)
Bloody Toshiba came with no disks.
I did a backup of the original Toshiba installation, so will have to dig that out, and check it out.

Also need to check them again, as SFC / Scannow needs the "original" CD as well.:p

The death of 1000 cuts installation continues. :p
It just pops up with another missing fxs*.* file.:p

I'm going to go to the computer shop where I bought my laptop and copy every fxs*.* file, I can find, onto a USB stick and bypass all this crap, I hope. Bazza

I've got a genuine MS XP Pro CD from my olde laptop, but can't figure out how to extract / expand the files ending in dl_, ex_, etc.

I tried following MS instructions, loading the Restore option at bootup, etc., but it (me?) only stuffed up my PC.
Fortunately I had a Restore point from the day before, so reverted back to previous Restore point.
That worked, except that my boot.ini file was wiped and the Restore option did not create a new boot.ini.
I had a boot.bak file so just copied it and renamed it to boot.ini. That fixed up this error.:)
Is there a SIMPLE way to expand / extract dl_, ex_ files.
Maybe I'm just too dense to follow MS "help". :D Bazza

"how to extract / expand the files ending in dl_, ex_, etc."

How about Izarc or Tugzip. Can't find Izarc here at MG's but TUGzip is:
    http://majorgeeks.com/TUGZip_d4670.html
I just tried both on my install disk and they seem to work on dl_, pi_,in_. Didn't see ex_ right off the bat but sure it would work too.

The program to extract the .dl_ (dll's) is extract.

Simply type in expand /? for more info.

    I.E. expand d:\i386\something.dl_ c:\windows\system32\something.dll

But, having that cd should work, as is. Odd. (8-o
