I have read through the how to protect yourself from malware link. Seems my copy of Windows is not recognized by MS. I am not surprised, as I found out the guy who sold me the computer was not exactly the honest type.

I am manually installing the patches for windows from the Software Patch site.

A lot of the patches require a restart. I am starting from 2004 just to be on the safe side. (I already have SP2 installed, and I do not know from then on) As I see it right now, it looks like it is going to take a week to get my computer back up to par.

    Is there an easier way?

    Thanks

Try rvmupdatepack but no guaranties. I was in the same boat as you when I found out trying to install SP1. Ended up buying an OEM copy.

There are also updates for Dec and Jan as they are not cumulative. Thanks for the tip, it took 1/2 hr to install the first three options. I wonder if these can be slipstreamed with nLite though it doesn't seem so.

This tool I have used in the past. It easily lets you slipstream SP2 into an XP install disk. It gets a little more complicated when it comes to putting in the hotfixes and updates. It can be done but using this along side Autopatcher makes for a very quick clean install.

The whole process of building the disk takes a while but once you are finished the next install will be very quick.

This is the Autopatcher home page to make sure you keep up to date.
