Might there be an advantage to constructing an external hdd by enclosing an internal in an external enclosure, rather than buying the external hdd?

There is no major advantage as far as performance or function. They are all internal hard drives in a case.

I have two drives that were internal now used as external: a CD burner and a CDburner/DVD player combo.
The advantage is that the enclosure was cheaper than an external optical drive, at the time. If the drive inside dies, I can replace it with another internal I've removed from a recycled computer.
