    Hi,

My internet has completely stopped working (I am posting from another laptop) and so I was able to complete only a few very basic steps of the 'read and Run Through First' sticky, like emptying the Recycle Bin, etc.; I am unable to download any of the programs like CCcleaner.

The Security Center service on my laptop is not running; it is 'off' and I am unable to turn it 'on'. When I restart my computer I receive an error message - 'Windows Defender User Interface has stopped working.' If I go to the Security Center, I am able to turn on the Firewall but once I click on 'Windows Defender' I receive the BSOD, Stop: 0x0000008e (0xC0000005, 0x8202EC35, 0xA5CBF3AC, 0x00000000).

I use an acer running on Vista; I am sorry that I am unable to provide any other information - as I mentioned, my internet has completely stopped working, both IE and Firefox. I would appreciate any help at all!

    Thank you,

    Fiona

Use another PC and then burn to a CD or flash drive ( CD is safer ) and then copy to the problems PC to the locations requested. Do not attempt to run anything from the CD.

Have you simply checked to make sure that your browser configurations were not changed to use a Proxy Server when you don't need one or vice versa?

    Hi chasalang,

Thanks for the help! I did check my internet settings and no proxys were being used, so I went with your suggestion and managed to run all of the scanners with the exception of RootRepeal, which gave me an error message everytime I tried to use it.

My internet is working again and so is the system restore and Security Center on my laptop! I've attached the logs and thank you again!

You're welcome. Looks like we got just about everything, but we have a few additional things to do before we can get to final steps.

First a note!!!! You need to get Vista updated when we finish your cleanup. You are running original Vista with no service packs which means you are missing many necessary securty updates and other general fixes.

Now you need to put ComboFix.exe on your Desktop as requeted or you will not be able to follow later instructions properly. You ran it from drive E:

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 15

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
