Internet Connection extremely slow

Ok, so I get on my PC this morning as I usually do every morning. I went to google news and tried to watch a video. I noticed it took forever to load, and was buffering every 2 seconds. It never had to buffer before, it was smooth and streamed perfectly.

So I got curious and went to speedtest.net to check my connection speed and noticed it was extremely slow. normally 250kb/s download and 100kb/s upload has now slowed to 26kb/s download and 36.2kb/s upload speed.

I have no idea where to start looking to figure out what the heck is bogging down my connection, but there is obviously something wrong here, I can barely do anything online, Dial-up is faster than this and I'm on cable. I'm not using any wireless, it's a straight ethernet connection to the PC.

Any ideas please and thank you?

it reads like an ISP problem. You may want to contact them to see if there's a known issue.

 

Well, after posting that message my bandwidth slowly kept decreasing until I could not even get online. But I was still able to send data at 35kb/s upload speed with 0kb/s download speed.

Had the ISP send a technician here first thing in the morning and it turned out to be a dying Surfboard SB5101 modem. Modem was replaced and all is back to normal.

 

Good customer service man! It took Videotron 5 visits before they changed the modem. We'll send you an expert this time sir. Some pimply young kid shows up and swaps the modem.

Yes, I love my ISP's service. I'm with Eastlink Canada, and i've had problems a few times now. Always within 24 hours they have sent someone here and the guy does not leave until its fixed. I've been with a few ISP's over the years and this is bar far the best service I've received from any internet provider.

A few months back they had to re-wire my whole block because there was too much eletrical noise or something like that in the lines and they couldnt pinpoint it, but it was stopping my modem from locking in. It was fun to watch the cherry-pickers drive around re-wiring every pole knowing it was my fault :-D lol
