Internet Explorer 7 Protected Mode on or off?

    I'm unclear on exactly what protected mode is for, my operating system is Vista Home Premium and I have Norton Internet Security with the Add on Pack running. Am I leaving myself open to problems if I have Protected Mode Off? I find I have issues with certain sites if it is turned on.
