Internet Explorer doesn't work properly

Recently, Internet Explorer has been acting up. All it does is just sit there and do nothing when I enter in URLs. This didn't matter much to me except one thing: Windows Update. I could not go to the site to update Windows. I believe the problem is due to spyware or hijacking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

    .

And note: you never finished following up on your previous thread here:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=71487

Is this the same PC? If so, did you complete what was given to you.

I did the "READ & RUN ME FIRST" thing and found no errors whatsoever. The only thing I didn't do were the online scans because IE didn't work properly and I assumed other browsers wouldn't be able to do the tests. Before the scans, I updated first. Anyway, the scans didn't help, so I attached a HJT.

I apologize for not finishing my previous thread, but I've solved it through recent reformatting.

There are no signs in your log that the online scanners were even attempted. What exactly happens when you try to run them? How far do they get? Explain any error messages that you get. I know you are saying you have problems with IE but can you give more details. There are no real problems showing in your log but you could fix the below line:

    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150/09e8d69e844ce5f6f017/netzip/RdxIE601.cab

    Why is Spybot's Teatimer running?

Give Ewido a run and post the log: Running Ewido Security Suite

Do you have your Windows XP SP2 CD?

I was unable to run the online scans on IE due to the problem. Basically, the problem with IE is that it doesn't do anything. When I enter in addresses and whatnot, it just sits and does not do anything. Therefore, I couldn't reach the site in the first place to do the online scans.

The fix didn't work. How do I turn off TeaTimer? And no, I don't have a Windows XP SP2 CD. I only have Restore CDs.

Teatimer was not running in your first log. Didn't you turn it on? It would not startup all by itself. When and why was it turned on?

To disable TeaTimer, run Spybot and click Mode and select Advanced Mode. Then click Tools and select Resident. Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    Now quit Spybot!

The fix may not have worked because Teatimer was running.

You did not post the Ewido log.

I still have the same problems. :(

IE doesn't go to the addresses I enter.

Meaning IE does not work if you use URL's? Is that it?

Have you tried using IP addresses and does that work?

Like instead of www.majorgeeks.com use 67.19.72.101

IPs don't seem to work either.

    • Open Windows Explorer and goto c:\windows\inf and locate the ie.inf file.
    • Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
    • When it completes, Reboot the computer
Let me know if this helps.

When it starts to install, it comes up with a message asking for a Windows XP SP2 CD. The problem is that I don't have the CD. I only have Restore CDs.

You need (as I asked about this earlier too) a Windows XP SP2 CD. Or your only fix will be to use your Restore CDs which will return you to the point in time of how your system was shipped. Everything you need to use will have to be re-install and updated.

At this point all I can suggest is you get call the place you bought the PC and ask them why there is no full system CD. Otherwise buy one. You can also attempt to discuss this further in the Software Forum. Maybe some one there will have another idea. Even an sfc /scannow will probably ask for the CD. It means files may be missing if it does. You could give this a try as a last resort. You run it from a command prompt window.
