    Hi
I am trying to get rid of trojan of some sort which is stopping me from getting to the internet. Every time I start IE, it freezes and ends up 'not responding' and when I go and try to start MSN, it tries to sign in but ends up, with a error message "MSN has encountered a problem and needs to close!" and ends up shutting down. I canoot view any web pages whatsoever.

I am running Win XP, service pack 3, antivirus is avg free and a-squared, both of which I have run only to find a couple of virus/trojans, but the problem still exists. AVG found trojan horse, Agent2.ryn (Healed) and A-squared found Trojan win32.winwebsec!IK.(Quarantined). I have searched these on the net but these do not seem to be the cause of my problems.

The only thing I can see suspicious is the O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter

Here is a Hijack this log:

    Ok
I have followed the instructions as per the forums guidlines to removing malware, and here are the resulting logs:

nb: When running malwarebytes antimalare, I had to run in safe mode as it kept crashing whenever I tried to clean the infections whilst in normal windows mode,

Apart from that all else went well.

I hope you can help soon.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You skipped the last scan. You need to run MGtools and attach the requested log which is C:\MGlogs.zip

The below is part of AVG
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter

No I did run the mg tools scan, I just forgot to upload it,
here it is, but after all the scans the problem still persisted, and it seemed it had a problem with the 3rd party addons.
After several days trying to work it out, it somehow fixed itself even after upgrading to IE7 and initially still having the same problems.

    Thanks for you help.

BTW as you can see, the system did have many Trojans which avg and a squared didn't pick up on.

First youu need to put ComboFix on your Desktop for our later instructions to work. You put it in the below location which is not what was requested and ComboFix is not an antivirus program either.
    c:\fixes\anti virus\ComboFix.exe

You still have a Master Boot Record (MBR) infection that needs to be removed which we will get to below. You will need to boot to the Recovery Console that you have installed (perhaps when you installed ComboFix) to remove this infection.

Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Then boot back into normal mode.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01
    Java(TM) 6 Update 15
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi Chaslang,
Thanks for your reply, I have done the following as per your instructions:
    Moved combofix to desktop,
Ran recovery console, and ran fixmbr, result:a new mbr was written.
Went to add/remove programs to remove previous versions of Java as listed, but only found Java 6 update 16 present. Uninstalled anyway.
    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe
could not find O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file) in the list,
assumed it must of been removed previously. Fixed other 2 entries as instructed.
Copied quote into notepad then onto combofix. Started to run/scan with combofix and after a few seconds of running, it went to "a blue screen of death" (A serious error has occurred) cant remember exact wording. After a restart, dragged CFscript back onto combofix, and started to run, but was advised it was expired and if I wanted to "run in reduced mode". I clicked "no" and restarted, then was prompted to update after dragging CFscript back onto combofix. Allowed to update, and scan ran successfully.
Updated Java to Java 6 Update 16.
Ran CCleaner and cleaned approx 800mb.
    Please find attached logs.
Thank you again for your help.
After my last reply, I did a Google search and from what I gathered re the mbr infection, was that it was a false alarm and not really an infection. Little did I know!!!
Hope the logs help you to help me!!!
    Thanks again!!!!

    You're welcome.

Totally incorrect. I would not have asked you to run fixmbr if you did not have an infection. You had a real MBR infection which can be very dangerous and has been known to steal personal information. You should seriously consider changing passwords for ALL accounts that you use online especially banking/credit cards...etc. You should also call them to check for possible illegal access attempts.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi Chaslang,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I have done the final steps not long after you last replied and I can report that all is going well with said pc, and I would like to thank you for all your help.
As I said, I thought the mbr infection was a false alarm, but it seems I still have a lot to learn.
Again thank you for your help
    Cheers!
