Internet Explorer Script Error when running Trend Micro HouseCall

This error (Object expected) is displayed not only when I access the Trend site in IE8, but in Chrome too. The wording (Internet Explorer) of the error window is the same for both browsers. It crops up three times when running HouseCall; I opt to continue running scripts each time.

The operating system is XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600),
System Model is Shuttle Inc SG31 V10,
Main circuit Board is Shuttle Inc FG31 V10.

The scan completes but, in view of the script errors, I don't know if the accuracy/veracity of the (negative) result is reliable.

Can anyone suggest what may be the cause or the errors and how they may be avoided?

    Thank you for the reply.

I read the instructions in that Microsoft link and discovered that script debugging is already turned off, although I don't remember having done it.

You're running Trend Micro HouseCall. Do you suspect that the computer has been infected? If so then it could be the malware causing the errors.

You might also try resetting IE and see if that fixes it. How to reset Internet Explorer settings

I run HouseCall, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy every now and then, perhaps weekly, just as a safeguard even when no malware is suspected.

This computer has been slow to boot for about a week - no idea why.

I would like to explore other possibilities before resetting Internet Explorer.

You don't have to do a full reset. You can reset the options back to their defaults and hopefully get rid of the script errors. You will not reset your personal settings unless you want to. Scroll down to 'Let me reset Internet Explorer settings myself' to see what is and isn't reset.

Is that something you are comfortable doing?

I did reset IE, using the "myself" route. It is still giving the script error message.

I have only just read your latest post and will go through Microsoft's procedures a little later this afternoon.

Thank you for your continued interest.

    Your welcome.

If you can't get the error solved by using the trouble shooting guide then I would start considering that it is a malware issue and head to the malware removal forum to work through the READ ME then post the logs in that forum.

The procedures in that guide didn't help, so I have to assume it's a nastyware problem.

Strangely, my other computer, upstairs, also displays the script error warning when HouseCall is run, and both computers are very slow to boot up. But there's no point in persuing that here.

Thank you once again for your advice. In due course I shall no doubt be starting a new thread in the malware forum.

I searched the Trend Micro forums for script error and it appears to be a common issue with XP and Trend Micro products. I didn't find a solid answer and the common reply is everything you have already tried. So it may not be a virus.

It could just be a corrupt file. You might try uninstalling everything that has to do with Trend Micro including software and browser extensions. Then delete any Trend Micro folders and after that do a disk clean up. Restart the computer and try Housecall again.

Are you using Trend Micro as your antivirus or are you just using the online Housecall scanner?

Thank you for that. I downloaded HouseCall from the links therein and it now runs without a script error.

It now looks as though it wasn't.

No, I use Microsoft's Security Essentials and XP's firewall. Housecall, Malwarebytes Free, and Spybot Search and Destroy are run occasionally.

I thank you both for your help.

Glad you got it figured out. Kinda strange. The beta version is more stable then the distributed version.
