Can a loose computer power supply cause a fire? Is it safe to keep one in the attic/loft?

    Greetings, Ray79...

    Question #1:

Short answer: No. I guess there's about a billion-to-one shot that a PSU might spontaneously combust - but there's also about a billion-to-one shot that I will win the lottery...

    Question #2:

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: same logic as Answer #1...

Well just don't plug it in, turn it on, pack stuff around it and leave it there.

Thanks guys. The reason I asked was due to the PSU retaining a charge. Hence people are told to never open it. The attic is a handy place to store spare PC stuff.

    Good morning...

Yes, there may be capacitors in a power supply that might retain an electrical charge - but only for a short amount of time. Any electrical component should be safe to store as long as normal common sense precautions are taken.

    Hi Ray,

The charge on that capacitor is 150 Volts and will dissapate in a few hours.
