Is "Network Security Service (NSS)" a problem?

New poster, however I've used your spyware removal process a dozen times, and its worked everytime, so a big thanks for being so articulate in your instructions.

I'm currently working on another PC that maybe infected with the HSA hijacker and I wanted to clarify something before I proceed. Your instructions are very explicit in the services to look for in your "READ ME FIRST..."on spyware removal i.e.

    Network Security Service
    Workstation Netlogon Service
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

I have found "Network Security Service (NSS)" running, and not "Network Security Service". Are these the same?

The reason I ask is that Network Security Service (NSS) is mentioned in other posts as a problem, but its not called out in your explicit instructions.

    Thanks
    Mutley

Yes! It is the same thing. At the current time, there is no valid service that is named:

Network Security Service or Network Security Service (NSS)

It looks like I have the about:blank hijacker on this PC. I have not been able to connect to the Internet in safe mode + networking mode. I get a "pop up" from ABI then it freezes the PC.

Should I run the Generic HSA Hijack process first, then continue with the spyware removal?

It may be best to complete all steps in the READ ME FIRST sticky first. If you cannot connect in safe mode, just run the online scans in normal boot mode. Then boot to safe mode to complete the other steps as specified. Let us know (when you are finished) what state you are in. If you still have a problem, follow the steps below exactly:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
