my ex found me a used laptop when mine broke a couple of years ago, and back then i didn't know much beyond internet and file explorer well.... but lately, as i've gotten braver and learned how to trouble shoot some stuff on my own fairly well, i've notice a few places in my folders and files where his name comes up with permissions. He doesn't have an account on my pc whatsover.

is there a way to sort folders that he has given himself permissions to, or any way to remove permissions for him specifically. i've posted this in the microsoft help forums and hear crickets chirping...

so to breakdown the important questions-

i'm sure if he has my pc and is using it for some reason, he can get into stuff/delete/makes changes to the files he's given himself permissions for... at least i'm pretty sure. Is this true?

can he get into stuff using his microsoft account remotely?

and how can i remove him from any permissions on my pc without screwing my own pc up in tribute to him? lol

i'm pretty comfy with adding myself to permissions, i've done it in my homegroup with no tragedies so far... so if i manually need to remove his i can, i just don't know how to find all the places he's lurking around...

oh windows7 is whats running. i also have a windows 8.1 laptop he's fiddled with a while back and would like to make sure he's not anywhere inside that pc either.

Try resetting the file permissions as follows.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.

    • Run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Select the Start Repairs tab, then click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
    * Reset File Permissions
    • On the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running before continuing.
    • Click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished. If it does not then reboot it yourself.

    2. Make sure each computer has a password for your account. If it was set up for you, change the password and write it down. Hide the note. Do not use the same password on different computers even if the username is the same.
