    Hi,

I've been having a problem with my wire fed internet recently, the claimed speed was 1.9 mbps, actual, about 1mbps. Then, without warning the speed dropped to about 0.45mbps! After a bit of whineing to Tiscali/Talktalk I decided to ditch the telephone extension (about 30 foot from the entry point) and invest in a Belkin N Wireless modem router!! Brilliant!!

After setting it up, all seemed to connect correctly and the speed reading in the bottom corner says a massive 135 to 165 mbps!! depending on the signal, which is generally very good!! Only 1 wall to come through see.

However, when i do a speedtest at speedtest.net, it returns a paltry 0.13mbps download speed and 0.37 upload speed. It's worse that dial-up ffs! And it really is slow, online poker for instance, the games over and i,m still looking at my 2 cards!!

Anyone know if its my computer, have i missed something or are the figures in the bottom right hand corner on the 'telly bit' lying?? and its a scam to get me to part with money?

I've tried with the AVG turned off. Maybe nothing related, but recently i have been unable to do a 'system restor' corrupt reg maybe??

    Help?

    Thank you.

Well i've done a tracert, anyone make any sense of this? There looks a few sticky points.

    Traceroute

In the traceroute output below, the red bars represent the mean latency. The cyan bars represent percentage of probes returned.
The hostname from the first probe is preserved, and asterisks (*) are added for additional hostnames returned from probes. The same goes for IP addresses.
The three numbers in parenthesis seperated by slashes are the minimum, mean, and maximum times received from all probes on that line.
Please wait while I trace the route to 81.170.40.245.

    /usr/sbin/traceroute -q 3 -m 30 -w 3 81.170.40.245

What you see at the bottom of your screen isnt your internet speed, its your LAN speed. If you're not getting what youre paying for from your ISP, you have to call them. You might be too far from one of their facilities, or if youre sharing a cable with too many people on your block, that can affect the speed too.

Correct. I'm only paying for 'upto 8mbps' anyway, and up until 10 days ago, i was getting 1.9 to 2.5 mbps through a thin cable. Then it just dropped like a stone to dial-up speed.
Talktalk took over from tiscali so i dont know if more customers have come on line.
Might have to give them a talktalking too!!

I've got a 7.1 Mbps connection and it is fast, Speedtest tells me I've got 680KB download speed, you should be similar. Ya, give talktalk an earful as that's not right at all! Oh, you may want to go back to your original setup before you talk to them. Good luck.

The problem is that Tiscali/TalkTalk are advertising and providing an UP TO 8Mb service, thus they can fob you off with excuses and they donn't have to do anything about it.
