Issues using ICS between two computers with a crossover cable

I'm trying to share an internet connection with a laptop from a desktop using Internet Connection Sharing and a crossover. Both computers are running XP. I set up ICS on the desktop and configured both computers with static IPs. Both are in the same workgroup and I can see each computer in My Network Places.

I connect to the internet on the desktop but the laptop cannot connect to the internet. I disabled the firewalls on both computers and it still will not connect. Also i've tried pinging each computer but with no success. I've done this time and time again with success but for some reason I think im missing something but not sure what. Any help is appreciated.

    IP on Desktop (with ICS)
    192.168.0.1
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.0.2
    No DNS

    Laptop
    192.168.0.2
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.0.1
    DNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

Could you do an IPCONFIG /ALL from each machine and post here?

In your post is the third IP address supposed to be the default gateway??? If so, I don't understand why on the desktop it the IP address of the laptop.

    Sorry for the delayed response.

For reference, the IP for the Desktop that is hosting the ICS is 192.168.0.1 and the laptop trying to access the internet is 192.168.0.2.

From the top PC listed, try deleting the Default Gateway - that PC is the default gateway for the network :)

EDIT: and add the same OpenDNS servers to it.

Cleared the Desktop's default gateway and added the DNS IPs to it but they still cant ping each other. Even tried putting it's own IP as it's default gateway with no success. Last thing I've tried was I pinged the localhost with success and reinstalled both drivers but no change.

Also my laptop can see the desktop in "My Network Places" but cannot access it and the desktop cannot see the laptop. Only thing I know of trying is either install another NIC, use a different cable, or try a bootable disk.

I tried the configurations in the Microsoft article but still no good. I tried setting the laptop to get an IP automatically but since im not hooked up to a router or have a DHCP server on the desktop, it gave me a 169.254.x.x IP so i changed it back to the static IP. I also ran the new connection wizard but it still did nothing.

I also cleared the ARP cache and flushed the DNS on both computers with no avail. This connection problem is getting weirder and weirder.rolleyes

OK.....your desktop systems IP address is 192.168.0.1 which is interesting.

Is there a router between your desktop system and the cable modem? Can you go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and tell me what your IP address is?

The reason the IP for the connection on the desktop going to the laptop is that ICS automatically sets it to 192.168.0.1. The separate internet connection on the desktop that i'm sharing has an IP from the ISP. Basically the desktop is serving as a very light weight router via Windows' Internet Connection Sharing between my internet connection and the connection going to my laptop. There is no router between the two. Only thing connecting the two is a crossover cable.
