iTunes crashes when attempting media playback

I cannot play media on iTunes, a dialogue box appears saying "a problem has occurred".
This is the 'error signature':

I can, however, do anything else, it just seems to be attempting to play music or video which is the issue.

Spec: OS: Windows XP SP2
iTunes v6.0.4.2
CPU Type: Intel Pentium 4, 1.7 GHz
RAM: 256 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 (128 MB)
