javascript disabled on LOCALfiles - for one user

    On XP SP3:

I recently lost the ability to use javascript on local files. It works fine when I access those files on the internet. The problem exists with both IE and Google Chrome.

I created a new user account and the problem does not exist there. But in both accounts I can't allow popups on LOCAL files - again there's no problem on the internet.

I've done everything I know how to do, including giving full permissions (including for pop-ups) on the Tools-->Internet Options --> Advanced tab in IE.

And there's nothing that looks appropriate in the "windows security" section.

    In the registry the HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main \ FeatureControl \ FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN REG_DWORDs for both iexplore.exe and explore.exe were already 0.

PS: In case it's relevant, when I access "settings" (for windows) I get an alert telling me that ActiveX is disabled for that page, so some things might not work correctly.

    Anyone have suggestions?

    TIA

PS: A PCTools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus scan in safe mode shows a clean machine.

Try doing all what you've done in safe mode, but obviously not the registry bit because it won't allow you to, then reboot, see if that makes a difference.

Yes, did all sets and resets during safe mode, without effect.
