    Just a quick question..

Have done a new build with

x1 SATA DVD RAM (plugged in to sata port 1 as hard drive in sata port 0)
x1 IDE DVD ROM (Pins set to slave)

Windows saw the IDE drive as the main one as in Bios it comes in at channel 0 (slave) and the sata comes up as channel 2 (master)

Have changed the drive letters round in windows so the SATA one comes first D: and IDE E: ... so in my comp they are listed in what in my opinion is the correct order... BUT the IDE (E) still has the little DVD Icon by it and the SATA (D) does not. Does this mean Windows stills see's the IDE as the big boy main one it will want to use for everything?

I want the whole system to see the SATA as the main one and primarily use it.

    Windows XP Service Pk 3

    Simon :)

    Hi Mac,

The IDE drive would be Master or Cable Select (CS) depending on which type cable you have. A slave is on the same old style M/S cable with another drive the first one being Master. Hope this helps a bit.

    Hi again Mac,

Master/Slave is on the same port (cable). Sata has no bearing on IDE ports so, single IDE would be Master or CS if your cable is Cable Select. Old style cables are only Master/Slave. Newer cables can be Master/Slave only, CS only or Master/Slave and CS. CS cables are usually color coded and C: or D: is determined by the connectors they are plugged to. Both drives must be plugged CS. Some CS cables have the positions Labeled. If you are not sure you may try Master and if that doesn't work you can try CS. No damage will be done. Hope this helps clear up your confusion. If not Google for CABLE SELECT. You should get a lot of helpful info.

    Luck, Jim

You should set the IDE drive to Master or CS using the jumper pin. Your IDE cable should have 3 connections, one goes to the Mobo, the second one is for the slave drive (usually grey), and the last one is for the Master device (usually black).

Cable looks like my awesome drawing below... :-D

Sata DVD drive is seen as master and the IDE as the slave but is there anyway of changing the channels in the bios?

As currently looking something like this

IDE CHANNEL 0 Master - None
IDE CHANNEL 0 Slave - GO-D1600D (thats the one connected via IDE that i want to be lower in the list)
IDE CHANNEL 2 Master - Maxtor etc etc - (Hard Drive connected via Sata)
    IDE CHANNEL 2 Slave -None
IDE CHANNEL 3 Master - Lite On DVD RW LH20A (sata connected dvd rw that I want at channel 0)
IDE CHANNEL 3 Slave - None

P.S while I've got this post running does anyone know how to turn off that bleep you get every time the computer turns on.

Well, that beep is called a POST beep. One beep means all is well. If you have a hardware failure, often you will get a differnt beep, and you can use those to determine what is wrong. I would leave it on.

If yours is beeping from an external speaker on your case, you can just unplug it form the mobo. Should be a header in the bottom right area of your mobo, where the on/off, reset buttons and all plug in. If the speaker is on the mobo, you could try a piece of tape on it to make it less noisy (do that at your own risk).

Which of the 2 IDE plugs on the cable are you using on the IDE hard drive? And what is your hard drive jumper set on?

The 'Hard Drive' is sata.. forgot to mention that. The only IDE on the computer is the secondary dvd drive which I ripped out my old build. And the actual pins on that are set to slave and its in the slave cable port aswell.. :)

Glad it is a happy beep and not a sad one lol :p

Just need to flaw out an annoying software maybe hardware issue..

If anyone can get on this one I'd owe u my life!!
